Brandon Shileikis Allows One Hit in Six Innings, QU Baseball Shuts Out Massachusetts, 7-0

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, Massachusetts) was masterful in his fourth start of the season as he allowed just one hit over six innings of work as the QU baseball team shutout the Massachusetts Minutemen, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 17-23 (6-6 MAAC) while Massachusetts falls to 11-19 (4-8 A-10). The Bobcats allowed just four hits all game long to the Minutemen. Quinnipiac has now shutout Massachusetts in each of their last two games, allowing just seven hits in 18 innings of play.
Shileikis tallied two strikeouts in his best start of the season for the Bobcats as he picked up his third win of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.10.
Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) caught fire at the plate once again as he went 3 for 5 with his second home run of the season, a double, two RBIs, one run scored and two stolen bases. Moskey finished the game just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) went 2 for 3 on the day with a double and a pair of RBIs for the Bobcats while Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) also went had two hits, including a double, with one run scored and one RBI.
Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, New York) singled, scored and drove in a RBI for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Batten and Pescitelli ripped back-to-back one out singles. Batten reached third on a wild pitch before Pescitelli moved up on the next wild pitch. Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) brought home Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) with a RBI ground out to make it 1-0. Oestreicher followed with a RBI double to centerfield that scored Pescitelli before Burns brought home Oestreicher with a RBI single.
Quinnipiac added another fourth run in the bottom of the third inning. Iannotti started off the inning with walk and went first to third on an Oestreicher single to right field before Burns brought home Iannotti with a sacrifice fly for his second RBI of the game.
Moskey gave the Bobcats a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as he tattooed his second home run of the season over the left field fence.
Justin Thomas (Enfield, Connecticut) came on in relief in the top of the seventh inning and pitched two innings of dazzling relief for the Bobcats where he struck out two batters.
Quinnipiac's bats came alive in the bottom of the eighth inning as Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) reached on a fielder's choice followed by Aron Fried's (Ossining, New York) single that put runners on first and second. Moskey roped a double for his third hit of the game to Rizzo's Ridge in right centerfield to score Gibson and make it 6-0. Fried came home two batters later as Pescitelli lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left field with the bases loaded.
Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, New Jersey) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Bobcats to hold down the 7-0 lead with two outs in the inning.
The Quinnipiac baseball team will return to action this weekend when they host the third place Monmouth Hawks for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 at 12 PM followed by the final game of the series on Sunday, May 1 at 12 PM.
