HAMDEN, Connecticut – Despite five runs and 12 hits from the Quinnipiac offense, the Bobcats fell, 11-5, to the Hartford Hawks in a three hour and 35 minute eight inning game on an unseasonably cold Tuesday, April 26.
With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 16-23 (6-6 MAAC) in 2016 while Hartford (26-12) picked up its 26th win of the season in the victory.
Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, New York) led the Bobcats offensive attack with three hits on the day, going 3 for 5 with a double. Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) went 2 for 4 with a double, run scored and a RBI while Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) continued his stellar hitting with a single, RBI and a walk.
Eight of the nine hitters in the lineup recorded hits on the day and all nine reached base at least one time.
Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) singled, walked, scored and stole two bases in the contest for the Bobcats while Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) singled, scored a run, drove in a RBI and stole a base.
Hartford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Quinnipiac even came up to bat. The Bobcats got one back in the bottom of the second inning. Oestreicher led off with a double to left centerfield before moving up to third on a Burns single to left. Saporito then poked a single to left field to bring home Oestreicher. After Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) walked to load the bases, the Bobcats recorded three straight outs to end the inning.
The Hawks tallied four more runs in the third and fourth innings to take an 8-1 lead before Quinnipiac could get two back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gibson singled with one out in the inning and moved up to second on an Aron Fried (Ossining, New York) single. Moskey roped a single to center field that scored Gibson easily. After Batten reached on a fielder's choice that put runners on first and second, the Bobcats executed the double steal to perfection and Moskey came home to score on a throwing error by the Hartford catcher.
The Bobcats put up another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull within 8-4. Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) walked to lead off the inning and moved up to third on a Burns double down the left field line. Saporito then grounded out to score Iannotti from third base. Quinnipiac ended up stranded the bases loaded to end the inning.
Trailing 11-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Bobcats got another run to make it 8-5. Batten reached on an infield single and advanced to second on Pescitelli's third hit of the game. Iannotti reached on fielder's choice that put runners on the corners for Oestreicher, who hit a sacrifice fly to scored Batten. Following the inning, the marathon game was called due to darkness.
