QU Baseball Takes Series from Manhattan with 10-4 Win on Sunday

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) cleared the bases with a key two-out triple in the bottom of the fourth inning to key the Quinnipiac baseball team to a 10-4 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers on Sunday afternoon at the QU Baseball Field.
The Bobcats have now won seven of their last nine games to improve to 16-22 (6-6 MAAC) while Manhattan fell to 12-24 (4-8 MAAC) as they dropped the series to the Bobcats.
Moskey had another clutch day at the plate for the Bobcats as he went 2 for 3 with his triple, walk, three RBIs and two runs scored. Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) led the team with three this on the day with two RBIs. Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, New York) tallied two hits with a run and a RBI while Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) hit a pair of singles with two runs scored and one RBI.
Eight of the nine players in the lineup came around to score at least one run in the game and eight of the nine also recorded a hit.
Alex Vargas (New York, New York) picked up his first win as a Quinnipiac Bobcat as he pitched the first five innings, yielding three unearned runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Closer Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) tied the program record for most saves in a single season with his seventh, tying Gary Binkiewicz's record from the 2014 season. Hitt pitched the final four innings of the game allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) reached first on an error by Manhattan third baseman Anthony Rocchietti. Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) singled him over to third base before Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) roped a double to right centerfield to score Iannotti. Saporito picked up an RBI one batter later with a RBI groundout.
Manhattan cut Quinnipiac's lead in half in the top half of the third inning. Richie Barrella reached first on a fielder's choice and moved up to second base on a throwing error. After a wild pitch moved him up to third base, Christian Santisteban grounded out to Batten to score Barrella.
The Bobcats added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead over the Jaspers. Aron Fried (Ossining, New York) led off with a double and was sacrificed over to third base by Moskey. Batten drove home Fried with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Pescitelli singled with two outs for the Bobcats, moving up to second on a throwing error by Carrera at short before scoring on Iannotti's RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Jaspers got within a run with two runs in the fourth inning to make it 4-3. With the bases loaded, Jason Patnick came home to score on a wild pitch before Ryan Gronlier scored on Carrera's infield single.
Quinnipiac exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning for four runs to take a commanding 8-3 lead. Burns reached on second as Santisteban dropped a fly ball to right field with one out in the inning. Saporito singled to put runners on the corners before Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) drew a walk to load the bases. After Fried fouled out, Moskey cleared the bases with a two-out triple to right centerfield. Batten then brought home Moskey with a bunt single down the first base line to make it 8-3.
Neither team scored a run until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Bobcats took a 9-3 lead. Moskey doubled down the left field line, just over the leaping glove of Rocchietti at third base. Batten single to right to put runners on the corners before Pescitelli singled off the pitcher to bring home Moskey.
Manhattan made it 9-4 in the top of the eighth inning as Fabian Pena hit a laser over the right field fence. The Bobcats got the run back in the bottom half of the inning as Saporito singled before working his way around the bases on three wild pitches to give the Bobcats a 10-4 lead.
The Quinnipiac baseball team will return to action with two mid-week games on the docket. Quinnipiac will host Hartford on Tuesday, April 26 at 3 PM and Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 27 also at 3 PM.
