Bobcats Remain Undefeated (3-0) in the MAAC in 2015-16
NORTH HAVEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team celebrate Senior Day in style as the Bobcats made quick work of Niagara, sweeping the Purple Eagles 7-0, on Saturday evening at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 10-6 on the season and 3-0 in the MAAC while riding a three-match winning streak. The Bobcats pick up their second consecutive 10-win season after going four straight years without hitting the double digit win plateau. In addition, Quinnipiac also clinches consecutive 10-win campaigns for the first time since 2004-06. Prior to 2014-15, Quinnipiac's last 10-win season came in 2009-10 when the Bobcats finished 10-5. Niagara drops to 4-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play with the loss.
All six Bobcats in action on the day earned two victories led by two seniors in Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) and Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) who were both honored prior to the start of the day in the Senior Day ceremonies. The third member of the senior class - Ben Teicher (Kendall Park, New Jersey) – was also honored prior to the start of play. In four years, this senior class has combined to win 38 team matches and 201 overall matches (singles and doubles), 166 of which have come at Quinnipiac.
Roser added to his already impressive individual career resume, teaming up with Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) at No. 1 doubles to defeat Felipe Fuentes and Francis Nadeau, 6-4. Roser followed that up with a dominating 6-0 and 6-0 victory in No. 5 singles over Chris Grossi. Roser ups his career total to 108 career victories after his two-win day, standing fifth in the program's Division I history while his 58 singles wins rank third and his 50 doubles wins are sixth.
Kuwert also dominated his matches on the day, first teaming up with Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) for a 6-2 win over Brent Boleslav and Joseph Smithyman at No. 2 doubles. He followed that up with a 6-0 and 6-0 sweep of Smithyman at No. 4 singles to pick up two victories on the day. Kuwert moves his career win total to 51 while also improving to 11-5 in singles matches in 2015-16.
Ezaka was involved in what was easily the most entertaining match of the day as he locked up with Fuentes in an epic clash at No. 1 singles. After falling in the first set, 6-7 (4), Ezaka bounced back with another highly-contested second set, 7-6 (2). Battling to back-to-back tiebreakers, Ezaka and Fuentes continued their epic duel in a third set tiebreaker which went the way of Ezaka, 7-5. Combined with his victory at No. 2 doubles, Ezaka moves his career win total to 97 including 27 in the 2015-16 campaign.
Zaretsky came through with big game plan late in sets in his No. 2 singles match as he went on to win, 7-5 and 7-6 (5), in a back-and-forth battle against Boleslav. At No. 3 doubles, Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York) took care of business, 6-1, over Grossi and Mark Mackowski. Rozenstein went on to sweep his individual day with a 7-5 and 6-1 victory over Nadeau at No. 3 singles while Haraguchi made quick work of Mackowski at No. 6 singles with a 6-0 and 6-0 sweep.
Up next for Quinnipiac is the continuation of non-conference play on Tuesday, April 5 with a 3:00 PM start at former NEC foe Sacred Heart.
