
QU Baseball Erases Six-Run Deficit Late but Falls to Northeastern, 12-9

BROOKLINE, Massachusetts – The Quinnipiac baseball team erased a 9-3 lead by the top of the eighth inning hard fought contest against Northeastern on Wednesday, Apr. 13 but could not complete the comeback as the Huskies took the win, 12-9, at Friedman Diamond.
The Bobcats fall to 9-20 (1-5 MAAC) on the season while the Huskies improve to 15-14 (4-4 CAA).
Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) went 3 for 5 with a double and three runs scored in the game to extend his hitting streak to seven games while Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) also tallied three hits, going 3 for 4 with a walk, run scored and a RBI. Batten and Burns were two of four players in the game to record three hits.
Quinnipiac's offense pounded out nine runs on nine hits in the game. Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, New York) singled and drove in a RBI and Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) singled, scored two runs and walked once. Despite going hitless, Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) walked once, scored a run, drove in two RBI and stole a base while Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) walked twice, scored two runs and stole two bases.
Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, New Jersey) allowed just one hit and two base runners over three scoreless innings of relief that allowed the Bobcats to get back into the game. Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, New Jersey) took the loss for the Bobcats as part of Northeastern's three-run eighth inning.
Northeastern scored one run in the bottom of the first inning off starting pitcher Charlie Murray (Charlton, Massachusetts). Charlie McConnell tripled to lead off the game and swiftly came home to score on a passed ball.
The Bobcats got two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead as Moskey drew a four-pitch walk before stealing second and third base to get himself in scoring position. Batten reached on a fielder's choice while Moskey scored on an error. Pescitelli reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Batten to third before Pescitelli stole second base. Iannotti grounded out to shortstop and allowed Batten to score.
The lead did not last long as the Huskies scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead. McConnell and Keith Kelly came home to score on a Nolan Lang two-RBI single before Nick Fanneron lifted a two-run home run over the left field fence.
Aron Fried (Ossining, New York) gave the Bobcats a third run in the top of the fourth inning. Burns doubled to right field to lead off the inning before Fried brought him home with a RBI single to centerfield with two outs.
Four more runs by Northeastern in the bottom of the fourth inning extended the lead to 9-3. Kelly got the scoring started with a bases loaded-RBI single to right centerfield that scored Michael Geaslen. With the bases still loaded and one out in the inning, Fanneron cleared the bases with a three-RBI double down the right field line scoring Kelly, McConnell and Max Burt.
The Bobcats started their rally in the top of the sixth inning after Oestreicher, Burns and Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) drew three straight walks. John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) grounded out to first to score Oestreicher to make it 9-4.
Three more runs in the top of the seventh inning got the Bobcats within two. Batten drilled a ground-rule double to left to lead off the inning before scoring on Pescitelli's RBI single. Iannotti walked before Pescitelli was forced out at third on a fielder's choice by Oestreicher. Burns singled to left to score Iannotti from second base. After a wild pitch put runners on second and third, Gibson brought home Oestreicher with a sacrifice fly to left centerfield.
Quinnipiac tied up the game in the top of the eighth inning to even up the game at 9-9. The Bobcats loaded up the bases with one out in the inning as Moskey walked, Batten singled and Pescitelli was hit by a pitch. Iannotti brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Moskey before Batten scored on a passed ball.
Northeastern scored its first runs since the bottom of the fourth inning to reclaim the lead for good. Jake Farrell drove home McConnell with a RBI single before Lang scored on a throwing error by Fried that allowed Zach Perry to reach. Mason Koppens brought home Farrell with a RBI bunt single to third base. Northeastern stranded the bases loaded to end the inning.
The Quinnipiac baseball team returns to action on Thursday, Apr. 14 to play its postponed game with the Hartford Hawks at Fiondella Field in West Hartford, Connecticut with first pitch set for 3 PM.
