On the Road Again
The Quinnipiac baseball team is back in action this weekend as they travel to Poughkeepsie, New York to open up MAAC play against the Marist Red Foxes at 3 PM on Thursday, March 24 followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 beginning at 12 PM.
All-Time Against Marist
Quinnipiac is 3-4 all-time against Marist, with four of their matchups coming this past season in their first games as conference opponents. The Red Foxes took the regular season series in Hamden, 2-1, before the Bobcats got the best of the Red Foxes in the opening round of the MAAC Tournament, 7-3. Thomas Jankins pitched a complete game in the MAAC Tournament for the Bobcats on his way to being named to the All-Tournament Team.
Scouting the Red Foxes
Marist is 6-10 this season heading into the first conference weekend of the season. After getting swept by UNC Greensboro this past weekend in North Carolina, the Red Foxes knocked off NJIT, 4-2, on Wednesday. Greg Kocinski leads the Red Foxes with a .344 batting average in 10 games, with three doubles, on home run, 11 RBIs and seven runs scored. As a team, Marist is batting .223 on the season with just one player playing in all 16 games this season. Sean Keenan leads the Red Foxes pitching staff with a 2-2 record and a 4.11 ERA to go with a team-high 21 strikeouts. Charlie Jerla is right behind Keenan going 1-3 with a 4.34 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 29 innings.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats trailed by as many as seven runs Wednesday afternoon but could not complete a comeback as they fell to the Yale Bulldogs, 8-6. Matthew Oestreicher went 2 for 4 with a three-run home run to lead the offense while Ben Gibson hit his third home run of the season. Gibson also drew two walks and scored two runs while Rob Pescitelli went 1 for 2 with a double, runs scored, stolen base and three walks.
Heating Up
Joseph Burns is starting to tear the cover off the ball as he has hit three home runs in his past five games, and two in the last two games. Burns hit his first career home run against Bethune-Cookman before launching two against North Florida. He currently leads the team in home runs and is second in runs scored with 10. Against Yale, Burns had a RBI single as part of the Bobcats comeback attempt.
A New Streak
Matthew Batten is riding an 11-game hitting streak, with 15 hits after singling against Yale on Wednesday. Batten's best game of the season came against Bethune-Cookman where he went 3 for 5 with his first career home run, a double and three stolen bases. Batten's hitting streak is the second longest of the season behind Lou Iannotti's 15-game hitting streak. Last season, Batten set the Division I program record with a 25-game hitting streak.
Patience is a Virtue
Pescitelli showed a lot of patience on Wednesday, as he has done all season long, going 1 for 2 with a double, stolen base, run scored and three walks. Pescitelli has drawn a team-high 14 walks, good for a .413 on base percentage. His seven stolen bases are also good for the most on the team. Pescitelli is batting .274 this season.
Nelly's World
Ryan Nelson was one of the top Bobcats this past week as he batted .375 over four games against Bethune-Cookman and North Florida, including his first home run of the season. Nelson recorded multiple-hit games in three straight games, going 2 for 4 in each one with an extra base hit.
Top Gun
Thomas Jankins has been electric for the Bobcats this season, striking out 28 batters in four outings of work. The Bobcats' righthander has tossed a team-high 26 2/3 innings, including his last start where he pitched eight scoreless innings.
Save Machine
Alex Vargas has transitioned into his new closer role with the Bobcats fairly effectively, already recording four saves this season, just three away from tying the single-season program record. Vargas has yet to allow a run of his own this season with 7 2/3 innings in eight appearances.
Big Ben
Ben Gibson launched his third home run of the season for the Bobcats against the Bulldogs with a solo home run to dead centerfield. Gibson is tied with Burns for the most home runs on the team and second on the team with a .305 batting average.
Up the Ranks
Lou Iannotti had his 15-game hitting streak come to an end in the final game of the weekend series with North Florida, ending his longest career hitting streak. The streak also is up there in Division I program history as it ranks tied for the eighth longest.

After the Quinnipiac baseball team's three-game series with the Red Foxes, the Bobcats will travel to Hanover, New Hampshire to take on the Dartmouth Big Green at 3 PM on March 30.
