
QU Baseball’s Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short in 12-8 Loss to North Florida

Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, New York) went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run for his first long ball of the season and drove in three RBIs to lead the Bobcats offensive output on Saturday afternoon. Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) also went 2 for 4 for the Bobcats with his second home run of the season and two runs scored. Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) also hit his second home run of the season for the Bobcats.
Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tennessee) went 2 for 4 with a double, run scored and a RBI for the Bobcats while Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) extended his hitting streak to 15 games in the loss.
Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) and Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) each had a single, RBI and a run cored while Matthew Payero (Corona, New York) had a RBI single. Eight of the nine Bobcats batters recorded a hit in the game while seven of the nine scored at least one run.
Quinnipiac falls to 6-9 on the season with the loss despite scoring eight runs and tallying 11 hits. North Florida returned to the win column as they improve to 12-9 this season.
Seven North Florida batters recorded two hits in the game, with four different players scoring two runs and four more recording two RBIs. Corbin Olmstead led the Ospreys as he went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run and a walk.
The Ospreys scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Dakota Higdon singled down the left field line with one out in the inning, scoring Chris Thibdeau who reached with a leadoff walk. Christian Diaz lined a double down the left field line that scored Corbin Olmstead and Dakota Higdon before Diaz scored on Kyle Brooks' RBI single.
Quinnipiac got a run back in the top of the third inning as Batten led off with a single before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Pescitelli lifted a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Batten and make it 4-1.
North Florida added three more runs in the bottom half of the third inning to chase starting pitcher Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) from the game. Brooks singled up the middle to score Diaz followed by a Chris Berry single through the right side that scored Nick Karmeris. After Hitt left the game for Justin Thomas (Enfield, Connecticut), Patrick Ervin laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Diaz to make it 7-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Karmeris ripped a home run over the right field wall to give North Florida an 8-1 lead.
The Bobcats started to chip away at the Ospreys' lead in the sixth and seventh innings with three runs to make the score 8-3. Moskey led off the top of the sixth inning with a single and came home to score on Pescitelli's first home run of the season to cut the Ospreys' lead. Just one inning later, Gibson hit his second home run of the season to make the score 8-4.
North Florida added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 12-4 lead. Berry scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a one-out single. Higdon doubled to right field, scoring Ervin from second base followed by an Olmstead two-run home run over the left centerfield wall.
Burns jump-started the Bobcats four-run ninth inning with a lead-off home run, his second home run of the season. Nelson and Gibson hit back-to-back singles before John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Payero slapped an opposite field single through the left side of the infield to score Nelson. Batten followed up with a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Gibson and both runners tagged up. Moskey lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield after Batten's to score Bodenhamer. North Florida made a pitching change to replace Trace Norkus with Daniel Moritz, who got Pescitelli to fly out to end the game.
The Bobcats and the Ospreys wrap up their three-game series on Sunday, March 20 at Harmon Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 1 PM before the Bobcats play their first home game of the season on Wednesday, March 23 at 3 PM against the Yale Bulldogs at the QU Baseball Field.
