HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team fell to Vermont in a non-conference home game, 13-3, on Wednesday afternoon. The loss snaps the Bobcats' two-game win streak as Quinnipiac now stands 2-4 on the season while the Catamounts improve to 2-5.
In a battle pitting two very contrasting teams against one another, Quinnipiac with the strong defense and Vermont with the high-powered offense, the offensive attack of the Catamounts paved the way to the win for the away side.
Vermont, which features an offense that is generated from feeds behind the net rather than primarily isolation sets, set the tone early with a 5-0 run to start the game. The Catamounts saw four different goal scorers break through in the early going as the five goals occurred in a span of just 10:49 to open the game.
In the next 16:08 of the first half, the Bobcat defense settled in and allowed just one more Vermont goal while Quinnipiac's offense saw its greatest output of the game. Aileen Carey (Long Beach, New York) was on the receiving end of consecutive assists from Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) as the senior midfielder scored a pair of goals to make it 6-2 with 3:58 remaining before halftime.
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the four-goal margin was the closest they would be to the lead for the remainder of play as the Catamounts scored seven of the final eight goals including two in the final four minutes of the first half to take an 8-2 halftime lead.
The pace of the game slowed at the start of the second half as neither team scored for nearly 10 minutes before Vermont's Vanessa VanderZalm found the back of the net at the 20:07 mark.
Devin Kelly (Miller Place, New York) extended her goal scoring streak to three straight games as she took a defender one-on-one and scored with 19:03 remaining to make it 9-3.
Vermont netted the last four goals of the game as the Catamounts walked away with the 13-3 victory and moved to 9-4 in the all-time series with the Bobcats.
The two-time defending MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Kyle Larkin (Holbrook, New York) was steady again in net as she posted 10 saves on 23 shots to come away with her third double digit save outing of the season.
Kiera Kelly (West Islip, New York) was all over the stat sheet once again with four ground balls and three caused turnovers on the defensive side of the field. Allison Kuhn (Kingsville, Maryland) racked up a career-high five ground balls while Alex Hlesciak (Lumberton, New Jersey) picked up three draw controls for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac ends its three-game home stand on Saturday, March 19 as the Bobcats take on Hofstra at 3 PM in what will be the second game of a doubleheader as the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team takes on Marquette at 12 PM on Saturday.
