HAMDEN, Connecticut – Facing a seven-goal deficit at the half, the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team fared much better in the second half but couldn't overcome the margin as the Bobcats fell to Hofstra, 13-5, on Saturday afternoon at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field. The loss drops to Bobcats to 2-5 on the season with the start of MAAC play looming next Saturday at Niagara.
A comparison of the stat sheet following the game shows these teams were very evenly matched with Hofstra holding a slight edge in nearly every major statistical category including shots (29-27), ground balls (24-23), draw controls (11-8) and turnovers (14-13). The difference in the game was Hofstra's goalkeeper Alexis Greene who posted 11 saves on 16 shots-on-goal.
Quinnipiac's goalkeeper Kyle Larkin (Holbrook, New York) played well in the match, posting 10 saves on 23 shots-on-goal for her second straight double digit save outing as well as her fourth in seven games this season, but the Pride found better shots from closer quarters around Larkin's net and were able to cash in on their shot attempts throughout.
Hofstra got off to a good start with three goals in the first 4:37 of play before Quinnipiac was able to break through with a goal from Aileen Carey (Long Beach, New York) at the 20:21 mark.
Unfortunately, the Pride went on a decisive 7-0 run that stretched into the second half to eventually go up 10-1 on the scoreboard. Tiana Parrella was a difference maker throughout for the road side as she tossed in eight points (four goals, four assists) to lead the Pride attack.
Over the final 25+ minutes of play, however, Quinnipiac showed signs of life as they outscored the Pride 4-3 over the majority of the second half. Alex Hlesciak (Lumberton, New Jersey) took a feed from Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) and scored her first goal of the season while Devin Kelly (Miller Place, New York) followed three minutes later with her fourth goal to make it 10-3. Kelly has now scored at least one goal in four straight games for the Bobcats.
After Hofstra tacked on three straight goals, Quinnipiac closed the game strong with the final two goals scored, both of which coming off the stick of Carey. The senior midfielder now has ran her streak of multi-goal games to four straight while she holds the team-lead with 12 tallies through seven games played.
Carey, Kiera Kelly (West Islip, New York) and Leah Walter (Londonderry, New Hampshire) snagged three ground balls each while Kiera Kelly and Cara O'Meally (Bay Shore, New York) each added two caused turnovers.
DeVito (two assists) extended her point streak to four games as she leads the team with eight assists, all of which she has compiled over the last four contests.
Quinnipiac will now take a week to prepare for the start of conference play which opens at Niagara on Saturday, March 26 with the opening draw set for 12 PM.
