The Quinnipiac baseball team is heading to Florida for spring break as they open up their eight-game road trip with a four-game series at the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in Fort Myers, Florida from Friday, March 11 to Sunday, March 13 at Swanson Stadium
All-Time Against Florida Gulf Coast
Quinnipiac and Florida Gulf Coast are playing in their first ever games between each other.
Scouting the Eagles
Florida Gulf Coast has enjoyed a great baseball program since going Division I in the 2003 season, recording 30 win seasons in every season except 2011 and 2012. The Eagles were picked to finish second in the Atlantic Sun Preseason Coaches' Poll, receiving three first place votes. Jake Noll was tabbed as the Preseason Player of the Year for the second straight season. Heading into the weekend, the Eagles are 4-8 on the season with wins against South Florida, Illinois and two against Bethune-Cookman. Five of the six teams that the Eagles have played have either been ranked or receiving votes. Colton Bottomley leads the team with a .383 batting average with 11 RBIs, seven runs scored and three doubles. Noll is batted .370 with a team-high 20 hits, seven extra base hits including five doubles, 12 runs scored and nine RBIs. Despite a 2.41 ERA, Brady Anderson is 0-3 with 13 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings. As a team, the Eagles have a 4.94 ERA, allowing 56 runs (44 earned) in 102 innings this season.
Last Weekend
The Bobcats picked up their first win against an ACC opponent since the 2004 season with a 4-2 victory against the Virginia Tech Hokies in the final game of the four-game series. Lou Iannotti led the Bobcats at the plate over the weekend, boosting his batting average to .367 on the season. Taylor Luciani picked up his second win of the season for the Bobcats.
MAAC Pitcher of the Week
Luciani's efforts on the mound did not go unrecognized as he was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week after tossing his career-high seven innings. Luciani also struck out five batters in the outing as he pitched the longest outing of his career after tossing 6 1/3 innings of relief in the MAAC Tournament last season.
Johnny Bench Award Watch List
Quinnipiac catcher Lou Iannotti has been named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List for the first time in his career, one of 74 catchers in the country to be named to the watch list. Iannotti is also one of two catchers from the MAAC to be nominated.
Historic Win
The Bobcats win against Virginia Tech on March 6 was a big moment for the Quinnipiac baseball program. Prior to the win, the Bobcats had not defeated an ACC opponent since a 13-11 win against the University of Virginia on March 8, 2004.
Louis' Lunch
Iannotti has had a remarkable start to his season, rattling off an eight-game hitting streak on his way to a team-leading .367 batting average, .441 on base percentage, and .400 slugging percentage. Iannotti has also compiled 11 hits to lead the team and drive in seven RBIs. Last weekend, Iannotti led the team with six hits against the Hokies and four RBIs.
Rob and Big
Rob Pescitelli is also among the top players on the Bobcats as he is second on the team with a .286 batting average and is riding an eight-game on base streak. Pescitelli is 8 for 28 on the season while his six walks and one hit by pitch give him a .429 on base percentage. Getting on base a lot, Pescitelli has already stolen five bases this season, good for the most on the team.
It Goes Like This
Justin Thomas has been one of the Bobcats top pitchers through two starts season. Thomas pitched six innings in a no-decision against the Hokies, striking out a season-high seven batters in the game. He scattered six hits over the outing while allowing just two runs. On the season, Thomas is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA, pitching 13 innings with just eight hits allowed and opponents are batting .174.
Everything Has Changed
Taylor Luciani has transitioned into the starting pitcher role this season and adjusted nicely, leading the Bobcats with a 2-0 record and a 2.77 ERA. In 13 innings this season, Luciani has allowed just four runs on 12 with eight strikeouts. Luciani is the Bobcats only pitcher with two wins this season. After allowing two runs on four hits in the first inning against the Hokies, Luciani allowed just one hit over his final six innings of work.
Big Relief
Matthew Osieja's bullpen efforts have been incredible to open up the season, making four appearances and allowing just one hit. Osieja has pitched four innings with four strikeouts, with the one hit yielding in a .071 opponent batting average. Osieja's efforts have led to one save this season.
The Batten Identity
Matthew Batten came around to score three more runs and drive in two RBIs against Virginia Tech in the series last weekend, including a pair of runs on March 6 in the Bobcats win. Batten has scored a team-high eight runs this season while his six RBIs are second on the team. Batten is also second on the team with two doubles while in the field he has been a part of six double plays.
Sunshine State
The Quinnipiac baseball team will have two days off after their four-game series against Florida Gulf Coast before taking on the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in a single game on Wednesday, March 16 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
