QU Acrobatics & Tumbling Falls to Baylor in Season Opener, 286.96-278.775

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University acrobatics and tumbling team took two of the six events in their 2016 season opener against Baylor, but ultimately fell 286.96-278.775 to the reigning national champions. With the result, the Bobcats stand at 0-1 on the year while the Bears improved to 1-0. Quinnipiac won the Compulsory and Pyramid events while scoring two perfect 10's on the day.
The meet started off with the Compulsory event which consists of four heats, each with a possible high score of 10. Quinnipiac earned a slight lead over the competition with a 38.50 to the Bears' 38.40. The Bobcats outscored Baylor in two of the heats while tying the Bears in the Tumbling heat with a 9.3. Quinnipiac started off with a 9.3 in the Acro heat before putting up a perfect 10 in the Pyramid heat. QU was then edged by Baylor in the Toss heat, scoring an impressive 9.9 against a 10 from the Bears.
In the Acro event, the Bears outscored Quinnipiac, 29.35-28.45 out of a possible 30 for either team. In the 5-Element heat, sophomore Abby Ziser (Pompton Plains, New Jersey), junior Allee Tallman (Farmington, New York), senior Kayla McCormack (Hanson, Massachusetts) and junior Noelle Brasier (Simi Valley, California) combined to record a 9.8. After an 8.95 in the 6-Element heat, QU responded with a huge 9.7 in the 7-Element to outmatch the 9.55 from the Bears. Heading into the Pyramid round, Quinnipiac trailed Baylor by .08.
The Bobcats won their second event of the day, 29.80-29.75, in the Pyramid round. After two consecutive 9.9's in the first two heats, Quinnipiac came back with a perfect 10 in the final heat. At halftime, QU trailed the Bears 97.50-96.75 with three events remaining.
Out of the break, Baylor slightly extended their lead with a win in the Toss event. Quinnipiac scored a 29.10 out of a possible 29.70 start value, but the Bears captured a 29.40. After taking each of the three heats, Baylor held a 1.05 advantage.
The Bears recorded their second consecutive event win with a victory in the Tumbling round, outscoring QU, 58.350-55.525. Quinnipiac's lone heat win came in the Aerial heat. Senior Taylor Johnson (Foxboro, Massachusetts), a 2015 NCATA All-American, recorded a 9.88 with a great performance on the mats.
Baylor won their fourth event with a victory in the Team round. The Bobcats scored a 97.40 out of a possible 107.15.
Up next, the Bobcats will travel to Philippi, West Virginia for their lone try-meet of the year. Quinnipiac will take on Alderson Broaddus and Fairmont State on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 12 p.m.
