Bobcats Need to Win Regular Season Finale Against Saint Peter's on Wednesday to Gain Spot in MAAC Tournament
LOUDONVILLE, New York – The Quinnipiac women's soccer team fell to Siena, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon from Siena Field. The loss sets up a must-win game for the Bobcats in order to qualify for the MAAC Tournament as the regular season finale next Wednesday at home against Saint Peter's.
Siena (8-5-3, 6-2 MAAC) controlled the pace of play from the start of the match as the Bobcats (9-6-1, 5-4 MAAC) were outshot 20-8 and dominated in terms of corner kick opportunities 13-1. Olivia Myszewski (Elm Grove, Wisconsin) did her best to keep the Bobcats in the game as she tallied a career high seven saves for the third straight game but the defensive effort wasn't enough in defeat.
"We didn't lose today because of any historic trend against Siena," said Quinnipiac head coach Dave Clarke. "We lost because they were better, worked harder and took their chances. We cannot win games if we decide not to compete for 90 minutes especially against a team as good as Siena."
Coming out of the gates on fire, the Saints nearly went ahead as consecutive Amber Alfonzo shots hit the post but a third quality scoring chance would not go wasted as Kelsey Horst received a through-ball streaking up the teeth of the Bobcat back line from Alfonzo. Going in on Myszewski one-on-one, she buried one past the Bobcat keeper coming off her line to make it 1-0 in the 22nd minute.
The best scoring chance of the day for the Bobcats came less than two minutes later as Jess Fontaine (Enfield, Connecticut) possessed from 25 yards out and touched to her right foot. With the defense trying to recover, she took an open shot from distance and nearly curled it in but the woodwork was there to deny the scoring chance.
Siena continued their dominance deep into the first half as the shot total (11-3) and corner kick discrepancy (9-1) weighed heavily in favor of the home side. Still down just 1-0, the Bobcats were very much in the game entering the second half but the Saints quickly put away a second marker to ice away the result.
Sarah Pandolfi (North Haven, Connecticut) led the team in shots with three (two on-target) while Fontaine and Kelly Caruso (Rocky Hill, Connecticut) added two apiece.
Standing with 15 points and just one MAAC game remaining, the Bobcats need a win in their regular season finale to guarantee a berth into the MAAC Tournament which opens on Saturday, Oct. 29.
