
No. 2/3 QU Women’s Ice Hockey Falls to Mercyhurst, 3-2, For First Loss of the Season

ERIE, PA – No. 2/3 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey fell to Mercyhurst, 3-2, for its first loss of the season on Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) and Miranda Lantz (Mildmay, Ontario) each scored in the Quinnipiac loss. The Bobcats fall to 4-0-1 (0-0-0 ECAC) with the loss, while Mercyhurst improves to 1-1-1 (0-0-0 CHA) thus far in the 2016-17 season.
Quinnipiac had a good chance to break the tie with 10:48 left in the first period. Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) collected the puck on the side of the Mercyhurst net and crossed it to Woods. She attempted to one-time the quick pass into an open left side of the net, but a Lakers' defender was able to get a stick on the pass to keep the game tied.
Mercyhurst had an opportunity to break the tie with 3:22 left in the opening period. Quinnipiac goaltender Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) lost her stick in a crowd in front of the net, but moments later still forced Sarah Hine to shoot wide of the goal to keep things knotted 0-0.
The Lakers got on the board 4:53 into the second period. Taylor Accursi netted her first goal of the season, pushing the puck into the goal amidst a scrum in front of the net to give Mercyhurst a 1-0 advantage. Megan Whiddon was credited with an assist on the play.
The Bobcats would bounce back, however, evening things up with 5:54 left in the second period. Turner intercepted a Mercyhurst pass mid-ice, skated up the right wing and dumped the puck off to Woods – who put it past Lakers' goaltender Jessica Convery to even the score, 1-1. The goal was Woods' third of the season, while Turner earned her fourth helper of the year on the play.
Mercyhurst's Brooke Hartwick put the Lakers back on top with 35 seconds left in the second period. Morgan Stacey fired a shot toward net, and Hartwick deflected it in to make it 2-1.
Quinnipiac would tie things up once again with 15:52 left in the third period. Lantz scored the second goal of her collegiate career, putting home a loose puck to even the score 2-2. Randi Marcon (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was credited with an assist – her first of the season.
Mercyhurst's Rachel Smith would break the tie again just 2:08 later, cleaning up an unclaimed puck above the Bobcats' crease to make it 3-2. Smith's goal was the game-winner, assist awarded to Molly Blasen.
Rossman made 23 saves in total for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac and Mercyhurst square off again tomorrow afternoon in Erie. Puck drop is slated for 2 p.m. from the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
