Bobcats Move to 5-0 at Home in 2016, Avenge 3-2 Double Overtime Loss at Marist Last Season
HAMDEN, Connecticut – One look at the pregame scouting report had fans expecting a shootout, only what they witnessed on Saturday afternoon was a clinical performance from the Quinnipiac women's soccer team in their 3-0 domination of Marist. Quinnipiac's second straight win boosts the team's record to 6-4-1 (2-2 MAAC) while the Bobcats remain unbeaten at home, moving to 5-0 from the QU Soccer Field. The Red Foxes drop to 4-7 (0-3 MAAC) on the season.
Quinnipiac and Marist – the two highest scoring teams in the MAAC coming into play – both came in averaging 1.90 goals per game while also ranking in the bottom half of the league in terms of goals-against average. With all the pre-match hype surrounding the offenses, Quinnipiac showcased its full potential not just on the offensive end but in recording a clean sheet on the defensive side of the ball.
Carly Glaser (New City, New York – pictured above) entered late in the first half and broke the scoring open after a near scoreless opening 45 minutes. The junior forward playing in her 29th career game, recorded her first career goal which ultimately went down as the game-winner on the afternoon. Jess Fontaine (Enfield, Connecticut) notched her second career multi-goal game as she followed Glaser's tally with two of her own to ice the win away for the Bobcats.
Points came in bunches on the day as Al Pelletier (Cheshire, Connecticut) was the best player on the field throughout the majority of the first half, finishing the game with two assists to give her the first multi-assist game of her career. Ally Grunstein (Warren, New Jersey) also picked up two assists as her forward pass to Pelletier helped lead to the Glaser goal while her incredible blast late in the second half from 30 yards away hit the crossbar but landed right in front for Fontaine to knock in. Jess Gargan (Dublin, Ireland) and Mackenzie Tibball (West Hartford, Connecticut) also both added one assist from the back line. Tibball's assist is the first career point for the freshman coming in just her second start.
The pace of play was unexpectedly slow in the early going as the two sides combined for just four attempted shots in the opening 40+ minutes. A consistent breeze coupled with a wet playing surface and cool conditions played a role in the defensive style early but an opportunity arose late in the stanza. Grunstein corralled a throw-in at the near side and sent a through-ball to Pelletier whose blazing speed had no match along the Marist back line. As Pelletier neared the end line, she sent a centering pass in the box for an open Glaser who was mobbed by her teammates immediately following the ensuing goal in the 44th minute.
Heading into the halftime locker room ahead thanks to the last minute Glaser marker, the Bobcats turned the momentum into another tally just 57 seconds into the second half as Fontaine buried her first of the day. Gargan created the scoring chance coming from her center back position and carrying deep into the Marist defensive end. Looking up, she spotted Pelletier making another run up the far side. Gargan's through-ball connected as Pelletier ran down the pass and centered to Fontaine in the box who struck a shot high on the Marist keeper Makala Foley to make it 2-0.
After a pair of missed chances for the Bobcats that would've added to their lead, a third chance came out of nothing as Tibball passed up to Grunstein on the near side. Grunstein one-touched to her right foot and booted a shot from nearly 30 yards away that twirled towards the target. As Foley dove, the shot banged off the crossbar and right back down to the grass where Fontaine was waiting as she knocked in the game-clinching goal.
The defensive outing put on by the Bobcat back line against an elite scoring team was clinical as Quinnipiac held Marist to just seven shots (three on-goal) in the game including just one in the first half. The MAAC's leading scorer coming into play Camille Bowen (19 points – nine goals, one assist) was held without a shot in 73 minutes as the Bobcats locked down the gifted scorer throughout play.
Olivia Myszewski (Elm Grove, Wisconsin) finished with three saves as the freshman notched her first career shutout while picking up her third win of the season. Credit also goes to the back line of Jess Cascio (Hebron, Connecticut), Gargan, Tibball and Joanna Proctor (Frimley, England) as well as defensive midfielder Kylie Lance (Stow, Massachusetts) for their performance in the shutout.
Head coach Dave Clarke inserted all 21 field players as every non-injured Bobcat received at least five minutes of playing time in the three-goal win. The victory also avenges a 3-2 double overtime loss to Marist last season in a game wherein the Red Foxes scored the game-winner with just seven seconds remaining.
The Bobcats look to avenge another loss from 2015 in their next game as Quinnipiac heads to Gaelic Park in Riverdale, New York to take on Manhattan in a 7 PM start. Quinnipiac fell in overtime to the Jaspers, 1-0, at home last season.
