Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team will look to sweep the season series from Rider when it travels to Lawrenceville, New Jersey on Sunday to face the Broncs in a 4 p.m. game at Alumni Gymnasium.
The first meeting between the schools went Quinnipiac's way as the Bobcats earned a 64-60 home win back on Jan. 4 at the TD Bank Sports Center. Quinnipiac held a comfortable lead late, but had to withstand a furious rally in the closing minutes, led by Rider's Teddy Okereafor, who had 13 of ihs game-high 30 points in the final 2:30. Junior forward Donovan Smith (Chicago, Ill. - pictured) had 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Bobcats, including the two clinching free throws in the final five seconds to push the lead to four.
One player to watch for Quinnipiac as of late has been junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.) who has made two three-pointers or more in each of his last six games, and is shooting 18-33 (54.5 percent) from beyond the arc in that span. Harris made his last four three-pointers in a row in Quinnipiac's last game against Canisius on Sunday, and also made his first four three-pointers in the first half of a game at Monmouth on Jan. 9.
Freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) has also provided a boost to the Bobcats in recent weeks. Bundu was named the MAAC and the ECAC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 4 after a pair of huge games against Maine (23 points, 15 rebounds) and Iona (15 points, nine rebounds) and has surged into the top 10 in the conference in rebounding at 6.5 per game. He is averaging 10.0 rebounds in his last six games, after averaging 4.4 in his first 10. Bundu's efforts have helped the Bobcats maintain their national lead in offensive rebounds per game at 17.6, just ahead of West Virginia at 17.2.
After facing Rider, Quinnipiac will return to action with a busy stretch of three games in five days, beginning with a home game against Monmouth on Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m., the second half of a doubleheader with the Quinnipiac women's basketball team, which faces Monmouth at 5 p.m. The Bobcats will then host Niagara on Saturday at 2 p.m. and face a short road trip to Fairfield on Monday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
