
QU Men's Tennis Wins Three Flight Championships at UConn Invitational

Storrs, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team won three flight championships at the UConn Invitational on the final day of competition on Sunday, Sept. 27. Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) won the Flight "A" North singles championship, Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) won the Flight "B" West singles championship and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) won the Flight "A" South consolation singles championship to represent the Bobcats, who won seven individual matches on the afternoon.
Sophomore Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) reached the Flight "A" North singles championship match where he fell to Rozenstein after winning in the semifinals.
For van Biezen, it was his second flight championship of the weekend after winning the Flight "A" doubles championship on Friday with senior Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey).
Alper and Rozenstein each battled in the Flight "A" North bracket, where they each played in three set matches to earn their finals matchup against each other. Alper faced Bentley's Brendan McCarthy in the semifinals, dropping the first set but came back in the second set to force a third one. The back and forth matchup ended with Alper on top, winning 2-6, 6-4, 13-11. Rozenstein battled in a three-set match of his own against UConn's Parker Goldstein, dropping the first set before coming back to win the next to and take the match, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7. The two wins created an all-Bobcat final as Rozenstein and Alper faced each other for the first time all season, with Rozenstein coming out on top for the championship win, 6-2, 6-1 over his Bobcat teammate.
In Flight "B" West singles action, van Biezen picked up a pair of victories for the championship and the second straight week he competed in a flight finals match. In the semifinals, van Biezen faced UConn's Jack McLister and after winning the first set in a tiebreaker, van Biezen pulled away for the victory, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Another UConn matchup awaited van Biezen as he faced Jonathon Edwards in the championship match and van Biezen won easily in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Rozenstein and van Biezen are still tied for the team lead in singles victories with a 9-3 record and now possess the team lead for overall victories with 15, posting 15-6 records.
Ezaka won his third straight match of the UConn victory with all three coming in the Flight "A" consolation singles bracket. In the semifinals, Ezaka took on Hartford's Alex Romaine and cruised in straight sets, taking the match 6-1, 6-2. Ezaka moved on to face Merrimack's Steven Francis in the finals, with Ezaka breezing past Francis to win the title, 6-2, 6-1.
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team will return to action on Friday, Oct. 2 when they host the Quinnipiac Invitational beginning at 10 A.M. before continuing on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4 with play beginning at 9 A.M.
