
QU Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Saint Peter's, Pick up First MAAC Win of the Season

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Quinnipiac baseball team split a doubleheader with the Saint Peter's Peacocks Sunday afternoon as the Bobcats picked up a shutout in the first game and the offense came alive for 10 runs at Caven Point.
Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Massachusetts) pitched seven shutout innings in the first game of the doubleheader to lead the Bobcats to their first shutout of the season. Jankins (2-2) scattered five hits and struck out six batters to pick up his second win of the season.
Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, New Jersey) led the Bobcats with four hits in the doubleheader while Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) stole five bases, including four steals in the first game alone.
The Bobcats scored 10 runs on 14 hits in the doubleheader, and also walked 12 times to provide a plethora of baserunners.
Game One
Three different players recorded multiple hits in the first game, led by Donaghue who went 3-4 with a pair of RBI. Batten had a strong day offensively, going 2-5 with four stolen bases and two runs scored. John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) recorded the other multi-hit game for the Bobcats, going 2-3 with a double. Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Connecticut) was 1-2 with a double, three runs, two stolen bases and two walks.
Quinnipiac broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning when Batten led off with a single and stole second base. Guglietti walked to put runners on first and second for Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut). The Bobcats successfully attempted the double steal, and a throwing error allowed Batten to score and Guglietti to move up to third base. With one out in the inning, Guglietti came home to score on a wild pitch just before Bodenhamer's double to left field.
The Bobcats really opened up the game in the sixth inning with three more runs to take a 5-0 lead. Batten led off the inning with a single to left center and stole second base again. After another walk for Guglietti, the Bobcats were successful once again with the double steal as Batten picked up his fourth stolen base of the day and Guglietti got his second. With runners in scoring position, Iannotti reached on a single that scored Batten. Bodenhamer sacrificed himself to advance Guglietti to third and Iannotti to second base before Donaghue ripped a RBI single to left field that scored Guglietti. Iannotti came home to score on the next at bat as Dale Long (Saratoga Springs, New York) reached on a fielder's choice.
Guglietti scored the final run of the first game for the Bobcats in the top of the eighth inning after leading off the inning with a double to right centerfield. Bodenhamer single to center with one out in the inning to advance Guglietti to third and put runners on the corners. Donaghue followed up Bodenhamer's single with a single of his own that brought home Guglietti to make it 6-0.
Gregory Egan (Seldon, New York) struck out a pair of batters in a scoreless ninth inning for the Bobcats.
Game Two
Quinnipiac fell in game two of the doubleheader with Saint Peter's after the Bobcats took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning but the Peacocks put five runs on the board to win, 5-4. Five different players recorded hits, including Guglietti's second double of the day and Mike Palladino's (Rockville Centre, New York) double, going 1-2 with a run and two RBI. Batten recorded another stolen base for his fifth of the day.
Starting pitcher Taylor Luciani (Berlin, Connecticut) made the second start of his career, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and striking out six batters.
In the top of the first inning, the Bobcats picked up right where they left off as they took a 1-0 lead. Palladino was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and immediately moved up to second base on Matthew Payero's (Corona, New York) sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch advanced Palladino to third base before Guglietti drove him home with a RBI double to right field.
The Bobcats got two more runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Donaghue led off the inning with a single to left, followed by a single by Noah Hahn (Petaluma, California). Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Massachusetts) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Hahn and Donaghue to second and third base, successful. Left fielder Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pennsylvania) reached on a fielder's choice and moved up to second base after Donaghue was thrown out at the plate. With runners on second and third, Palladino drove a double to left field that brought home Hahn and Ruditys.
Quinnipiac finished its scoring in the top of the fourth inning after Donaghue walked and was sacrificed to second base by Hahn. With two outs in the inning, Ruditys reached on an error that moved Donaghue to third base before coming home to score before Ruditys was caught stealing at second base.
Luciani took his shutout into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Peacocks scored five runs to take the lead and steal the game. Luciani gave up three runs before leaving the game with two outs in the inning and runners on first and third. Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) came into the game and allowed a run on a wild pitch to tie the game. After two hit batters, Hitt issued a bases loaded walk that brought home the fifth run of the game for the Peacocks before an inning-ending groundout to first.
In the top of the seventh inning, Quinnipiac nearly tied the game after getting runners on first and second by a pair of walks to Ruditys and Batten, as well as a sacrifice bunt by Palladino but the Bobcats could not complete the comeback.
The Bobcats will finish off their three game series with the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Monday, March 23 with the final game of the series at Caven Point in Jersey City, New Jersey at 12 P.M.
