NORTH HAVEN, Connecticut – Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) picked up yet another singles victory Tuesday afternoon as the Quinnipiac women's tennis team fell to Big 12 foe Iowa State Cyclones, 6-1, at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club.
Quinnipiac drops to 3-6 this season while the Cyclones improve their record to 5-8 as both teams get ready for conference play to begin this weekend.
The win was Young's fifth singles victory of the season and 15th victory overall to provide the Bobcats a point in the match against the Cyclones. Young took on Natalie Phippen in No. 5 singles which Young won easily in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Iowa State and Quinnipiac started off the match with doubles play, where the Cyclones took the first two matches leaving the final match unfinished. Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) and Young moved up to No. 1 doubles for the match with the Cyclones where they faced the No. 1 duo of Samantha Budai and Ksenia Pronina. Budai and Pronina took the match 6-1 over Horton and Young.
Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Florida) and Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) moved up to No. 2 doubles in the non-conference matchup where they face Meghan Cassens and Ana Gasparovic. With both teams battling, the Cyclones duo just moved past the Bobcats duo, 6-3, for the win. Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, New York) and Ariana Launie (Milton, Massachusetts) competed together for just the second time this season in doubles, slotting in at No. 3. With a 4-3 lead, the match was completed as unfinished because the Cyclones had already secured the doubles point.
After a quick break in the action, the two teams took the court for singles action. Dzulynsky and Budai played a great match at No. 1 singles, but Budai just barely won over Dzulynsky, 7-5, 6-4, in a well fought match. Raynor took the court at No. 2 singles against Pronina but the Cyclone defeated the Bobcat in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. In No. 3 singles, Rencheli and Cassens competed against each other, but the match was retired midway through the second set with Cassens leading, 6-2, 3-0. Alejandra Galvis took the court for the first time in singles where she faced Horton in No. 4 singles, with Galvis taking the math 6-2, 6-2. Launie and Caroline Anderson battled in No. 6 singles and after a lengthy first set, Anderson took the momentum and the match, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
