
QU Baseball One-Hit by No. 5 Vanderbilt in 8-0 Loss

NASHVILLE, Tennessee – Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) recorded the only single Wednesday night for the Quinnipiac baseball team as they were one-hit by the nationally-ranked No. 5 Vanderbilt Commodores in an 8-0 loss at Hawkins Field.
Despite just the one hit for the Bobcats, seven different players drew walks in the final game of the series with the Commodores, including Dale Long (Saratoga Springs, New York) who drew his team-high sixth walk of the season to raise his on base percentage to .476 after pinch-hitting for starting second baseman Noah Hahn (Petaluma, California) in the top of the seventh inning.
Vanderbilt improves to 13-4 with the victory before starting SEC play this weekend against Arkansas while Quinnipiac drops to 2-8 with their sixth straight loss.
Saporito finished 1-3 with a walk as he recorded his fourth hit of the season. Saporito's single with one-out in the top of the eighth inning broke-up Vanderbilt's combined no-hitter which had lasted 7 1/3 innings.
Left-handed reliever Ryan Johnson pitched five innings out of the bullpen for the Commodores with nine strikeouts for his first career victory. Johnson came on with no outs and the bases loaded in the top of the second inning after three consecutive walks issued by starting pitcher Tyler Ferguson. Ferguson walked five batters in 1+ innings on the hill with a strikeout in the no-decision.
Justin Thomas (Enfield, Connecticut) pitched 4.2 innings for the Bobcats making his third start of the season, with his record falling to 1-2 with the loss. Thomas allowed five runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in the game.
Gregory Egan (Seldon, New York) pitched two innings of relief allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts while Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, New Jersey) pitched 1.1 innings to finish out the evening for the Bobcats with two strikeouts.
Dansby Swanson finished the game 3-3 with a 2-run home run and three runs scored while Rhett Wiseman finished 2-3 with an three runs and a RBI to extend his hitting streak to 11 games for the Commodores. Vanderbilt scored a pair of runs in the first and third innings before adding single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Commodores added two more runs in the seventh to complete their scoring.
The Bobcats have Thursday off before returning to action with their final series of their trip to Nashville when they face the Lipscomb Bisons in a three-game series starting Friday afternoon at Dugan Field with first pitch scheduled for 5 P.M. EDT (4 P.M. CDT).
