HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior goaltender Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) set the new program record for wins in a single season with her 22nd victory in No. 5/5 QU Women's Ice Hockey's 2-0 win over Colgate on Senior Day at High Point Solutions Arena.
The Bobcats honored the four members of their senior class prior to puck drop against the Raiders: Laden, Morgan Fritz-Ward (Mason City, Iowa), Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Michigan) and Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden).
Laden broke the Quinnipiac single-season wins record of 21 previously held by former goaltender Victoria Vigilanti, who won 21 games in the 2010-11 season. The victory was also Laden's NCAA-leading 13th shutout of the season in the 24 save effort.
Laden is now tied for second place in ECAC Women's Hockey history with Brown's Ali Brewer, who also had 13 shutouts in 1998-99. Sitting just in front of Laden is former Clarkson goaltender Erica Howe who owns the league record with 14 shutouts in 2013-14. The shutout was also Laden's eighth shutout against ECAC Hockey opponents, tied for second place in league history with Howe.
Fritz-Ward scored the game-winning goal for the Bobcats, capping off senior day in style. It was her fourth goal of the season as she set a new career-high with her 17th point. Fritz-Ward's goal was also the 40th point of her career.
Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) set a new career high with her 11th goal of the season. Connery now has 23 points this season on 11 goals and 12 assists.
Defenseman Lindsey West (Ajax, Ontario) notched her first career two assist and two point game as she assisted both goals in the victory. Nicole Brown recorded a new career-high with her 10th assist of the season on Fritz-Ward's goal. Emma Greco also picked up an assist in the victory, as she tallied her fifth assist of the season.
The Bobcats peppered 48 shots on goal, doubling the Raiders shot total of 24 in the victory. Quinnipiac outshot the Raiders 23-10 in the first period before scoring two goals in the second period.
Colgate goaltender Ashlynne Rando finished the game with 46 saves on 48 shots.
Fritz-Ward was credited with the game-winning goal for the Bobcats 6:27 into the second period. West freed the puck out of a battle on the right boards and passed the puck off the glass into the neutral zone. Fritz-Ward raced to the puck and skated it into the offensive zone and passed it to Brown on her left with a two-on-one. Brown's shot on goal was saved by Rando and Fritz-Ward tapped the puck trying to score. The puck couldn't cross the line but Colgate's Lauren Wildfang knocked the puck into her own net.
Four and a half minutes later Connery doubled the Bobcats lead for the final goal of the game. West gained control of the puck in the defensive zone above the right faceoff circle and turned around with the puck to find Connery with a pass at the red line. Connery took advantage of the Colgate defense out of position and skated in all alone on the left side of the ice where she fired a shot over Rando's blocker to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
Quinnipiac hits the road for the final four regular season games of the year, starting with two games this week at St. Lawrence on Friday night at 7 P.M. and at Clarkson on Saturday afternoon at 4 P.M. The following weekend the Bobcats will close out the season at Brown and at Yale.
