KINGSTON, Rhode Island – As the championship season approaches, the Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team continued to progress on Saturday afternoon at the URI Coaches Invitational. Quinnipiac's group of sprinters had a very successful day as three Bobcats placed in the 60m while freshman sensation Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) scored the overall victory, the second of her career, in the 60m hurdle event. Quinnipiac placed 7th out of 10 teams with 36 total points on the afternoon.
"Our girls are really getting excited for the next month of the season," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "We've seen exceptional growth in many of our athletes and we'll continue to push them in practice to get us ready for the championships at the end of the month. We still have plenty of time to get better and that's what we plan on doing in the two weeks ahead of the MAAC Championships."
After notching her first career victory back on Jan. 10 at the Yale Invitational, Lee picked up her second 60m hurdles victory of the season with a 1st place finish on Saturday. The Quinnipiac rookie took on a talented field and had to fight for her victory as she started with the fastest preliminary time (8.90 seconds) of any runner but only by .02 seconds. Facing seven other competitors in the finals, Lee gutted out a time of 8.86 seconds to take first place, besting AIC's Tonique Sobah by 0.01 seconds.
The strong day for Lee and the remaining group of sprinters continued in the 60m dash as three Bobcats placed to earn Quinnipiac points in the team standings. Starting in the preliminary round, juniors Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) and Alea Simons (Piscataway, New Jersey) along with Lee all finished within the Top 8 to advance to the 60m finals. Samuels then led the way for the Bobcats in the finals with a time of 7.80 seconds to take 4th place while Lee placed 6th (8.04 seconds) and Simons claimed 7th (8.05 seconds).
Quinnipiac did see a program record fall on the afternoon as sophomore Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, New York) bested her own school record in the triple jump. Coming into the day with a program-best jump of 10.80m, Pisciotta bested that mark by a hair as she tallied a new QU record of 10.82m on Saturday. Pisciotta's jump of 10.82m (35 feet, five inches) was good enough for 8th place overall in the event, good enough to earn Quinnipiac points in the team standings.
Sophomore Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Connecticut) and junior Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, New Jersey) teamed up with solid performances in the 3000m as they finished 6th and 7th, respectively, in the event standings. Chaplen (10:30.78) and Campbell (10:36.57) both put forth solid efforts to lead the Bobcats' distance contingent. Campbell doubled up with an impressive run in the one mile run earlier in the day as she clocked in at 5:08.77 to earn 6th place overall out of 33 runners.
Another field performer to place on the afternoon was freshman Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) who tallied 5.35m in the long jump to take 6th place out of 19 competitors.
Quinnipiac heads back to Boston next as the Bobcats will compete in the Valentine Invitational from the Boston University Track Center on Friday, Feb. 13. The Valentine Invitational will serve as the last tune-up for the Bobcats prior to competing in the MAAC Championships on Saturday. Feb. 21 from The Armory in NYC.
