
QU Men's Ice Hockey's Michael Garteig Named HCA National College Hockey Player of the Month

Quinnipiac senior goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) was honored by the Hockey Commisioners' Association as the NCAA Division I National Player of the Month for November. The announcement from the HCA came after Garteig was named ECAC Hockey's Goalie of the Month for the second-consecutive month. Garteig is the fourth Quinnipiac men's ice hockey player to be honored with a monthly award all-time, joining Sam Anas in Nov. 2013, Dan Clarke in Nov. 2009 and Ben Nelson, who was named HCA Rookie of the Month in Feb. 2005.
Garteig saw action in an ECAC Hockey-leading nine games for the month of November, while also leading the league in total minutes (528:51), wins (seven) and shutouts (2). Most notable of his wins, or shutouts, came on Nov. 28 with a 36-save performance against UMass to earn his 14th career clean sheet (QU record) and his 59th career win - which tied the Quinnipiac program record previously held by J.C. Wells '01 and Jamie Holden '05. Garteig held the opposition to 11 goals for the month for a 1.25 goals-against average, while posting a .946 save percentage.
During a nine-day span form Nov. 13-21, Garteig was in net for all but one period of the Bobcats' five games. In that run, Garteig was 3-0-2 with a 0.83 GAA across 289:44 in goal while he also stopped 109 of 113 shots-on-goal for a .965 save percentage. Of the four goals allowed by Garteig, two came with the Bobcats' on the penalty kill. Garteig stopped 19 of 20 in a 4-1 win against national-ranked Harvard on Nov. 13 before a 22-save performance against Dartmouth on the following night. He also stopped 25 of 26 in a 1-1 tie against national-ranked Clarkson before blanking national-ranked St. Lawrence in a 36-save performance that saw him featured on ESPN SportsCenters Top 10 as the No. 4 play of the day.
For his career, Garteig is 59-21-11 with a 1.87 GAA and a .914 save percentage in 5,569:53 minutes over 96 career games. For the year, Garteig is 13-0-2 with a 1.26 GAA and a .946 save percentage. In 10 home games this season, Garteig is 8-0-2 with a 0.89 GAA and a .966 save percentage.To date, Garteig ranks fourth among active NCAA Division I goals with a 1.87 career goals-against average, but is the only one of the top five with more than 1,231 minutes in goal. Garteig's 59 wins rank first among all active goalies.
