HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac volleyball team won the first set 25-22, but Hartford rallied to take the next three sets and earn a 3-1 win over the Bobcats on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match at Burt Kahn Gymnasium.
With the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 3-24 on the season while falling to its in-state rivals from Hartford, which improves to 1-24 on the year with the win.
The Bobcats received 12 kills from freshman outside hitter Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.), while freshman setter Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) had a strong all-around match with six kills in 12 attempts, to go along with 31 assists and three service aces. Hartford was led by Katy Henchy with 17 kills in 27 attempts, while Paulina Modestow had 15 kills and Rachel Moll had 10 kills in only 12 attempts.
The first set was close most of the way, but with the score tied 16-16, the Bobcats went on a 7-2 run to pull ahead 23-18 on a Coffey kill from Miller. Hartford closed back within two points at 24-22, but a service error allowed Quinnipiac to take a 1-0 lead. In the second set, Hartford forged ahead 16-10 before Quinnipiac put a strong rally together to close within 18-16. With the Bobcats still within 20-17, Henchy had two kills around a block assist for a personal 3-0 run to give the Hawks a 23-17 lead, and they were able to close out the 25-19 win in the second set to level the match at 1-1.
Hartford kept the momentum going after intermission and stormed out to a 9-2 lead in the third set and forcing the Bobcats to use both timeouts in the early going. Quinnipiac clawed back to within 12-11 on an ace from sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.), and then tied the set up 16-16 after a Coffey ace followed by a Hartford error. After an exchange of points left the score tied 18-18, Hartford went on a timely 5-0 run to pull ahead 23-18 with Moll and Modestow tallying two kills apiece during the run. Setter Astrid Mangual finished off a 25-21 win with a fake set for a tip kill for the Hawks, who went ahead 2-1.
Quinnipiac started fast in the fourth set, jumping out to a quick 7-2 lead on back to back aces from Miller and a set to Coffey for a kill. Another Coffey kill gave Quinnipiac a 22-20 lead before Hartford rattled off five straight points to close out the match. A solo block from Henchy made the score 23-22 and gave the Hawks their first lead of the whole set, and Moll and Asha Wafer combined on another block to make it 24-22 and set up a match point. Henchy then tallied her 17th kill of the match for a 25-22 win in the set and a 3-1 win in the match.
Mangual had 46 assists on 50 of her team's kills to pace the Hartford offense (adding a kill herself to close out the third set). Moll had eight blocks (one solo) of the 11 that Hartford totaled on the day, while Paola Llerandi had a match-high 13 digs. Junior Sam Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J. - pictured) and Kloos each had eight kills for Quinnipiac, while junior Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Ind.) added seven in support of Coffey's team-high 12.
Quinnipiac is back in action this weekend when it returns to MAAC play with road matches against Rider on Saturday and Saint Peter's on Sunday.
