LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Quinnipiac Volleyball team gave MAAC co-leader Rider a tough battle, including a decisive 25-15 win in the second set, but the Broncs regrouped after intermission and went on to capture a 3-1 win over the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Rider remains in a first-place tie with Siena at 11-4 in conference play, while moving to 16-13 overall. Quinnipiac sees its record fall to 3-25 overall and 1-14 in the MAAC with the loss. Set scores were 25-22, 15-25, 25-17, 25-14 in favor of Rider.
Freshman outside hitter Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) had a strong day for the Bobcats, tallying 11 kills and only two errors in 31 attempts. Sophomore Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind. - pictured) added eight kills in 20 attempts for a team-high .350 hitting percentage, while freshman Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) had 29 assists and six kills.
After Rider won a hard-fought 25-22 first set, the Bobcats played some of their best volleyball of the season in the second, hitting .400 as a team and earning a 25-15 victory to level the match at 1-1. A Coffey kill broke a 9-9 tie in the set and started a 11-3 run that gave the Bobcats a 20-12 lead. The Broncs closed to within 21-15, but Miller had two kills in a closing 4-0 run, while Coffey and junior Sam Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J.) combined on the clinching kill.
The third set was tight most of the way, as a Jamie Termotto (Smithtown, N.Y.) kill had the Bobcats within 16-15. Rider, though, put together a 4-0 run with the first three points all coming on kills from Jennifer Borio, to take control of the set and move on to a 2-1 lead. The momentum carried into the fourth as Rider jumped out to an 11-4 lead, capped off by another Borio kill, and pulled away for a 25-14 win to finish off the 3-1 victory.
Kaitlyn Griffin and Hailey Riede led Rider with a match-high 13 kills apiece, while Borio finished with 11. Emma Aldaya added a match-high 24 digs for the Broncs to lead the team's defensive effort.
Quinnipiac returns to action tomorrow when it has another MAAC road match against Saint Peter's.
