
Sydney Rossman Records Second Straight Shutout as No. 8/7 QU Women's Ice Hockey Rolls to 5-0 Victory over St. Lawrence

CANTON, New York – Nationally-ranked No. 8/7 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey junior goaltender Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) recorded her second shutout of the weekend Saturday afternoon as the Bobcats skated to a 5-0 victory over the St. Lawrence Saints at Appleton Arena.
The Bobcats commanding win at Appleton Arena was their first since Nov. 12, 2011 as they extended their winning streak to three games and unbeaten streak to six games and improved to 9-1-3 (5-1-2 ECAC Hockey) while the Saints dropped just their second league game of the season to fall to 7-7-1 (4-2-0 ECAC Hockey).
Rossman's shutout was her fourth of the season and sixth of her career as she is in the midst of a career best shutout streak to 143:49 dating back to the last goal she allowed in a 4-2 victory at No. 10/10 Princeton on Nov. 14. Hours after recording a career-high 29 saves in a 3-0 shutout of No. 4/4 Clarkson on Friday night, Rossman continued to be a stalwart between the pipes, stopping all 17 shots that she faced.
Following her hat trick Friday night, Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) continued to flourish in her sophomore season two goals against St. Lawrence to give her five for the weekend. Following Saturday's win, Cianfarano leads the team and league with 14 goals, leads the team with 20 points and is second in the league in points. Cianfarano has now scored at least one goal in three straight games, multiple goals in two straight games and six goals over the three game span.
Freshman Randi Marcon (Winnipeg, Manitoba) netted the first two goals of her career on Saturday afternoon with one goal in the second period and third period to secure the win for the Bobcats. Adding to her assist earlier in the season, Marcon now has three points on the season.
Fellow freshman Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) returned to the scoresheet for the first time since Nov. 7 in style on Saturday, as she recorded the game-winning goal and an assist. Samoskevich now has four goals and 11 assists for 15 points to lead all ECAC Hockey freshman skaters in assists and points.
Senior captain Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) hit a significant career milestone with her 50th career point, becoming the 20th player and fourth defenseman in program history to do so. Roesler now has seven assists and 11 points on the season, the third most points among league defenseman and tied for the fourth most assists. Roesler has now recorded a point in three of the last four games.
Miranda Lantz (Mildmay, Ontario) hit the scoresheet for the first time in her career with two assists for the first to points of her career. Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) tallied her second two-assist game of the weekend for her seventh two-assist game, Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) picked up her fourth assist of the season on her 30th career point, Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) added her fourth assist of the season and Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) picked up her ninth assist and third straight game with her third period helper.
The Bobcats held the clear advantage in shots on Saturday afternoon as the Bobcats outshot the Saints 28-17 in the victory.
Samoskevich struck first with 8:43 to play in the first period to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead and they never looked back. Lantz won the faceoff in the left circle after the puck was blown dead in a tie up on the boards. Roesler received the puck off the faceoff from Lantz where she fired a shot from the left point that went off a stick in traffic right to Samoskevich in the slot where she tucked the puck into the back of the net.
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead with 4:22 to play in the first period on Cianfarano's fourth goal of the weekend. Cianfarano stole the puck in the offensive zone behind the net from St. Lawrence's Amanda Boulier before hitting Connery with a pass. Connery then shifted the puck onto the doorstep for Cianfarano where her initial shot was saved by St. Lawrence goaltender Sonjia Shelly but Cianfarano managed to jam home the rebound.
Marcon picked up her first career goal with 4:29 to play in the second period to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Marcon won the faceoff in the offensive zone back to Tamberg at the left point where her blast was redirected by Samoskevich and saved by Shelly. The juicy rebound kicked out into the slot and Marcon was right on the doorstep to put the rebound home for the goal.
Cianfarano added her second goal of the game with 7:03 to play in the third period to extend the Bobcats lead to 4-0. Woods fired a centering feed into the slot where Connery's initial shot went wide of the net. She chased down her rebounded before feeding the puck out front to Cianfarano to pound home the goal.
The Bobcats finished off their scoring with 3:17 to play in the game as Marcon added her second goal of the game and her career to make it 5-0. Brown started the play in the neutral zone after taking a pass from Tamberg where she led Lantz with a puck skating into the offensive zone. Lantz then centered the puck where it bounced off a skate in front of the goal right to Marcon to bury the goal on the doorstep.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team returns to action next weekend with the annual Nutmeg Classic Tournament at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Connecticut where the Bobcats will face the UConn Huskies in the first round of the tournament at 7 P.M.
