HAMDEN, Conn. – Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) scored her first two goals of the season for the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team in their season-opening 3-3 tie with the Mercyhurst Lakers Friday night at High Point Solutions Arena.
Quinnipiac women's ice hockey head coach Cassandra Turner made her head coaching debut for the Bobcats Friday night as she picked up the first tie of her career. The Bobcats (0-0-1, 0-0-0 ECAC Hockey) extended their season-opener unbeaten streak to four games, going 1-0-3 in the last four season openers
With Woods' first goal of the game, she tallied the 50th point of her career, becoming just the 19th player in program history to hit the 50-point mark. Woods' two goals are the second two-goal game of her career after recording two goals in the second game of her career at St. Cloud State in a 3-1 tie on Oct. 5, 2013. Woods also registered the 10th two-point game of her career with her two goal performance.
Freshman Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the second period. Samoskevich is the second straight freshman to score a goal in her first game, joining Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) who scored in her first career game last season against Connecticut.
Cianfarano recorded two assists in the season opener Friday evening for her first two points of the season, assisting both of Woods' goals. Seniors Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) and Lindsey West (Ajax, Ontario) each also tallied assists.
Junior Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) stopped 20 shots between the pipes for the Bobcats in her first start since Feb. 14 against Clarkson and made just the sixth start of her career, improving her career record to 4-0-2.
Emily Janiga scored two goals for Mercyhurst (0-0-1, 0-0-0 CHA) in the tie while Sarah Hine scored the game-tying goal. J'nai Mahadeo, Rachel Smith, Sarah Robello, Morgan Stacy, and Brooke Hartwick all recorded assists for the Lakers.
Woods got the Bobcats on the board for the first time in the 2015-16 season with a goal early in the second period. Cianfarano won a face-off in the right circle and backhanded the puck back to Woods who one-timed the shot from the top of the circle high glove side on Mercyhurst goaltender Sarah McDonnell to take a 1-0 lead 2:23 into the period.
Samoskevich doubled the Bobcats lead with 11:11 remaining in the second period with her first career goal. Tamberg gathered the puck off a turnover from the Lakers in the offensive zone and skated into the left circle where she backhanded a pass to Samoskevich. The pass slid through the slot to Samoskevich on the right side where she swiped the puck low, blocker side on McDonnell for the goal.
Mercyhurst got a goal back with 4:05 remaining in the second period to cut the Quinnipiac lead to 2-1. Mahadeo skated the puck into the offensive end and attempted to feed
a pass into the slot. The puck jumped over Barry's stick and Janiga dove to her left at the puck. She roofed the shot high glove side past Rossman for the goal.
The Lakers struck again late in the second period on the power play with Janiga's second goal of the game. Sarah Robello reset the power play at the left point, circling with the puck. Robello fired a pass through the slot to an open Janiga at the right post, where flicked the puck past Rossman to tie the game 2-2 with 2:34 remaining in the second period.
Woods struck once again for the Bobcats 6:51 into the third period to take a 3-2 lead. West collected the puck at the left point for the Bobcats where she fired a pass to Cianfarano below the left circle. Cianfarano shifted the puck with a centering feed through the crease to Woods where she tapped home the pass for her second goal of the game.
With just 24.6 seconds remaining in regulation, Hine tied the game for Mercyhurst to send the game to overtime. A loose puck hit the side of the net where Hartwick collected it behind the net and passed the puck up into the slot to Hine where she tapped home the game-tying goal.
The Bobcats and Lakers have a quick turnaround as they play the final game of the two-game series at High Point Solutions Arena on Saturday, Oct. 3 with puck drop scheduled for 1 P.M.
