DOVER, Delaware – The Quinnipiac University women's golf team won the 2015 DSU Invitational, edging second-place Fairfield by eight strokes, at Maple Dale Golf Club in Dover, Delaware. It was the second tournament win in program history after the Bobcats also took the 2012 Quinnipiac Classic.
Freshman stand-out Luciana Tobia (La Paz, Bolivia) tied Hampton's Britney Smith for first place, ultimately losing in a sudden-death playoff. Tobia followed her first-day score of 78 with an 81 (+9) to finish at 157 (+11). Tobia's 157 is a personal best for a 36-hole tournament, topping the 169 she shot at the Princeton Invitational.
"I'm ecstatic right now," head coach John O'Connor said. "Everyone played very well for this tournament. Luciana [Tobia] finished first and unfortunately lost in a playoff for medalist honors, but it's encouraging for what the future may hold. Julia Kemmling also had a great tournament and almost matched her first round score."
Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) finished two strokes behind Tobia in third place with a 159 (+13) after shooting a 79 on Sunday, Oct. 18 before Monday's 80 –which also stood as the second-best score of the day. Nicole Scola (Westerly, Rhode Island) finished tied for sixth after shooting an 86 on Monday to go with an 81 on Sunday for a two-day total of 167 (+21).
Senior captain Jenn Whaley (Farmington, Connecticut) shot a 168 (+22) for the tournament – posting an 84 on Sunday and Monday – to finish tied for eighth place. Quinnipiac freshman Abby Chase (Beaver Dam, Wisconsin) finished in 13th place with a 171. Emily Ribbins (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) finished in 15th place at 173 (+27).
Quinnipiac will play its final tournament of the Fall semester on Oct. 26-27 at The Saint Andrew's Golf Course in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York at the St. John's Invitational.
