QU Women’s Ice Hockey Skates to 1-1 Tie in Exhibition Game vs. Western
10/17/2015 9:52:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team took an intermission from its regular season schedule to face the Western Mustangs Saturday night at High Point Solutions Arena, skating to a 1-1 tie with the Mustangs.
Junior Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) scored the game-tying goal for the Bobcats with 8:27 remaining in the third period to pull the Bobcats even with the Mustangs who had scored just 1:20 before Turner's goal. Senior Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) picked up an assist for the Bobcats in the exhibition game on Turner's goal.
Freshman Claire Lachner (Commerce, Michigan) took the ice for the first time in her Bobcat career as she played all 65 minutes of the exhibition, making eight saves on nine shots in the tie.
The Bobcats offense was in full force Saturday night as they registered 95 total shots with 46 reaching the Mustang goaltenders. Quinnipiac outshot Western 46-9 in the game, including a staggering 14-0 in the first period and 8-0 in overtime. All but two Bobcats' skaters recorded at least one shot on goal in the exhibition. Western's defense shined bright against Quinnipiac as the Mustangs blocked 28 Bobcat shots.
Western scored the first goal of the game with 10:13 remaining in the third period to take a 1-0 lead. Brittany Clapham settled the puck at the right point before shifting the puck down the right boards to Kendra Broad in the corner. Broad skated a few feet into the circle before firing a centering feed to Clapham in the slot whose shot went through a screen from Stacey Scott in front of Lachner for a goal.
Turner tied the game just 1:20 after the Mustangs goal to bring the Bobcats back even at 1-1. Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) had the puck in the right faceoff circle of the offensive zone where she flung a pass through the slot to Turner at the bottom of the left circle. Turner's initial shot was saved by the Mustang's third goaltender of the night, Katie Jacobs. Brown gathered the rebound next to the post where she hit Turner with a quick pass and Turner's shot found daylight above Jacob's right shoulder for the equalizer.
The Bobcats return to regular season action next weekend when they host the Yale Bulldogs in a non-conference matchup on Oct. 24 between the two teams at High Point Solutions Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 P.M.
