HAMDEN, Connecticut – Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) scored two goals to lead the No. 5/5 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team on its way to a 3-1 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green Saturday evening at High Point Solutions Arena in front of 860 fans. Added to last night's 879 fans, the women's ice hockey team set a weekend attendance record with a total of 1,739 fans.
Kosta's goals were her eighth and ninth goals of the season, her first multi-goal game since scoring two goals at Cornell on Nov. 3, 2012. Saturday also marked Kosta's eighth two-point night on the season on her way to 24 total points. Kosta also pushes closer to the 100-point club, as she now has 96 points after the two goal night.
Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) scored the other goal for the Bobcats, her ninth of the season and bringing her just one goal away from tying her career of 10 goals in a season set in freshman season of 2012-13. Connery also set a new career-high for points in a season with her 21st point of the season.
One night after recording her 100th career point, Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Michigan) was honored in a pre-game ceremony before recording her second assist in as many games on Kosta's goal. The assist was her 10th of the season.
Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) recorded her 11th assist and team-leading 25th point of the season, while Morgan Fritz-Ward (Mason City, Iowa) tallied her 13th assist and Emma Greco (Burlington, Ontario) added her fourth assist of the season.
Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) tallied her 13th assist, one shy of her most assists in a season of 14 set in 2010-11 and 2012-13. Uden Johansson also moves one point closer to 100, as the assist was her 93rd career point.
Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) earned her 21st victory of the season with the 3-1 victory over Dartmouth, tying former goaltender Victoria Vigilanti for the most wins in a single-season in program history. Laden stopped 16 of the 17 shots she faced in goal as she maintained her NCAA-leading goals against average of 0.99.
Dartmouth's Robyn Chemago made 27 saves in the loss to the Bobcats while Brooke Ahbe scored her third goal of the season.
After a scoreless first period, Kosta scored her first goal of the game 7:40 into the second period to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Kosta fed the puck to Fritz-Ward on the end line where she skated into the faceoff circle and fed Darkangelo with a pass in front of the crease. Darkangelo skated towards the end line before backhanding a pass to Kosta in the slot where she tapped the puck past Chemago.
Connery added her goal just over eight minutes after Kosta's first goal to extend the Bobcats lead to 2-0. Greco fired a shot but it was blocked by a Dartmouth defender and Cianfarano chased down the puck in the right corner. Cianfarano circled around with the puck and rifled it through the slot to a wide open Connery on the back door for the goal.
With 4:13 remaining in the third period, Quinnipiac boosted its lead to 3-0 on Kosta's second goal of the game. Kosta skated the puck into the offensive zone before having it taken away by a Dartmouth defender. Uden Johansson swooped in behind the goal to regain possession of the puck for the Bobcats and found Kosta just below the left faceoff circle. From there, Kosta one-timed a shot over Chemago's blocker and into the net.
The Big Green got on the board 22 seconds after Kosta's second goal. Dartmouth broke out from behind its own net after a Quinnipiac shot. Devon Moir controlled the puck in the neutral zone just before center ice and backhanded a pass to a streaking Catherine Berghuis, who raced the puck into the offensive zone for a shot. Laden made the initial save on Berghuis' shot, but the rebound trickled out on top of the crease and Ahbe reached her stick out to tap it into the net.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday, Feb. 6 in their final game in the Do It For Daron fundraiser when they host the Cornell Big Red in another ECAC Showdown of Top 10 teams in the country at High Point Solutions Arena at 7 P.M.
