HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac men's soccer senior goalkeeper Borja Angoitia became the Bobcats' all-time win leader with his 27th career victory in a 2-0 shutout of Niagara University. Quinnipiac improves to 4-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play while Niagara drops to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
With the result, Angoitia and the Bobcat defense registered their fourth shutout in five games. Angoitia now has 20 shutouts in his career which is just two short of tying former Quinnipiac goalkeeper Frederick Hall at 22 for most all-time.
Tuesday's game got off to a slow start in the rain at the QU Soccer Field. Both sides recorded four total shots in the first half while Niagara had two on goal to Quinnipiac's zero. Freshman Shaquille Huggins (Trinidad and Tobago) tallied two shots in the first frame, both wide of the goal.
The second half was a much different story for the Bobcats as they jumped off to a quick start. In the 47th minute James Greco (Long Valley, N.J.) found Max Rothenbucher (Munich, Germany) in traffic, the freshman laid a beautiful one touch pass out to Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) at the top of the box. Baker buried the ball into the side netting for his second goal of the season. The goal marked Baker's eighth of his career. Rothenbucher and Baker also connected for the game winning goal against Providence (9/7).
With time winding down, Quinnipiac found the insurance goal off the foot of sophomore forward Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, N.J.). James Doig (Liverpool, England) put a perfect cross from near the sideline into the middle of the box to find the head of Sheiderman. He was able to redirect the pass and send it off the crossbar and into the net for his first career goal. The assist marked Doig's first of the season and fourth of his young career.
Quinnipiac outshot the Purple Eagles in the second half six to three. The Bobcats had two shots on goal in the game and both could not be saved by Niagara's keeper. Angoitia totaled four saves on his way to a record 27th win.
The Bobcats have now won their last three contests, all at home and move to 4-1 at the QU Soccer Field on the season. Up next, Quinnipiac travels to Buffalo, New York on Saturday, Oct. 4th to face the Canisius Golden Griffins in another conference matchup.
