Buffalo, N.Y. – In their second conference game of the season, the Quinnipiac men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie through double overtime against the Canisius Golden Griffins. The Bobcats faced a one goal deficit early in the second half before senior Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) broke the tie.
The first half was all Canisius as they outshout the Bobcats 8-2 and held a 2-0 advantage on corner kicks. Freshman Max Rothenbucher (Munich, Germany) and sophomore James Doig (Liverpool, England) each recorded a shot in the first frame. Goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao Spain) registered one save in a half that was delayed thirty minutes due to lightening. During the break a light layer of hail covered the field at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo.
The Griffins got off to a quick start in the second half, scoring in the 50th minute off their first shot attempt of the new period to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Nicolo Baudo scored off the assist from senior defender Jon Cary. The senior crossed the ball into the goal box where Baudo settled the ball and scored from six yards out. The score marked Baudo's second of the season and fifth of his career. It was the second assist on the year for Cary and ninth point as a Griffin.
Quinnipiac quickly responded and evened the score at one in the 55th minute off the foot of Baker. The senior jumped on a loose ball inside the box and fired a 12 yard strike past the Griffins' keeper. Baker's unassisted score was his third of the year and second in as many games. He leads the Bobcats with a team high six points.
Despite being outshot again, this time 9-5, the Bobcat defense stood strong behind Angoitia's three second half saves.
After 90 minutes of play, the Bobcats were set to begin overtime for the third time this year. Quinnipiac entered the game 1-0-1 in overtime games with a 1-0 win over cross-town rival Yale and a 0-0 tie at Army. QU tallied three shots in overtime and finished with 10 in the contest. Canisius outshot the Bobcats by 13, finishing with 23 shots and needing just one save to Angoitia's five.
Quinnipiac owns a perfect 4-0-1 record all-time against the Griffins in a series that dates back to the 2003 campaign. The Bobcats took the first meeting by a final count of 2-1 in overtime; earned a convincing 5-0 victory in the next meeting, and in 2008 defeated Canisius, 3-2, up in Buffalo. Last season in their most recent matchup, Quinnipiac took down the Griffins at home 2-1. The senior tandem of former Bobcats, Simon Hinde and Sam Nicol each scored a goal in the victory.
Next time out, Quinnipiac will come back home on Saturday, Oct. 11th to face Rider at 3 PM. Last season, in their first all-time meeting, the Bobcats took down the Hawks 1-0 in double overtime to clinch a share of the 2013 MAAC Regular Season Title.
