HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac Bobcats opened MAAC play with a strong showing against the visiting Manhattan Jaspers, but saw its comeback bid fall short in a 3-1 loss at Burt Kahn Court on Saturday afternoon. After falling behind Manhattan 2-0, the Bobcats rebounded in the third set with a dominating 25-14 victory. In that set freshman Nicole Milillo (Lynbrook, N.Y.) had three service aces while Quinnipiac as a team had an impressive six service aces in the third set.
After falling behind 7-3 in the fourth set, the Bobcats roared back to take the lead 17-15. After a 17-17 tie score, Quinnipiac would keep pace with Jaspers and eventually trailed, 21-20. Unfortunately, the Bobcats luck would would come to an end. After two questionable calls went against Quinnipiac in the final plays, the Jaspers regained momentum and closed out the set with a 25-20 win to claim the match.
The Bobcats did have a lot of good things to take from this game. One thing in particular was the Bobcats presence around the net throughout the game. Quinnipiac had nine blocks to Manhattan's one and were led by sophomore Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) who led the team with four blocks. Leigh was also a key component to the Bobcats attack as her seven kills trailed only sophomore Katie Urycki's 14 kills. Urycki (Chesterton, Ind.) had a great performance also adding three digs and three blocks.
Freshman Sierra Dawson (Larkspur, Calif.) had another strong performance for the Bobcats with her third 30-plus assist game in her early career. As a setter, there is no question that Dawson has been excellent, but she has been a very good contributor across the board. With four kills and having the second most digs with five in the match, Dawson is proving that she is a valuable all-around player.
Today was a very strong showing for the freshman class. Quinnipiac has solid contribution from Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.), Jamie Termotto, (Smithtown, N.Y.), and Cheyenne Orsi (Bristol, Conn.). The three of them contributed in limited time for Quinnipiac today and have to make Bobcat fans excited for the future Between the three of them they combined for 13 kills, three blocks, and three digs.
On the defensive side of the ball Quinnipiac once again heavily leaned on Cody Michaels (Versailles, Ky.). She once again led the team in digs and whose great attitude and leadership on the court keep the Bobcats focused when the game was getting tough.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 21 with the backend of their weekend doubleheader. Quinnipiac takes on Iona College at Burt Kahn Court with first serve set for 1 p.m.
