
QU Women's Volleyball's Comeback Bid Falls Short In 3-2 Loss To Iona

The Quinnipiac University women's volleyball forced a fifth set against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Iona, but ultimately fell, 3-2. Quinnipiac trailed 2-0 in the match before winning the third and fourth sets. The Bobcats drop to 1-11 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC while Iona improves to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Sophomore Katie Urycki (Chesteron, Indiana) had a career-high 23 kills while freshman Sierra Dawson (Larkspur, California) tallied 47 assists, tying her with Emma Ogden for the Quinnipiac single-game assist record. Ogden accomplished the feat against Rider on Oct. 5, 2013.
Another sophmore, Cody Michaels (Varsailles, Ky.) played another strong match as the team's libero. For the match Michaels led the team with 20 digs while making some key digs to keep crucial plays alive for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac showed a strong presence around the net thanks to their two tallest players, sophomore Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) and freshman Cheyenne Orsi (Bristol, Connecticut). Leigh had another strong game for the Bobcats, contributing seven kills and two blocks for the game. Orsi gave Quinnipiac a glimpse of the impact player she could become. Orsi was a nightmare around the night once she entered the game in the third set, rallying Quinnipiac with 10 kills and two blocks in just three sets.
After falling behind 2-0 in the match, the Bobcats roared back in the third set, winning 25-17. In that set Urycki led the attack with six of her kills while Orsi came off the bench to add four kills of her own.
In the fourth set Quinnipiac and Iona went back-and-forth in the beginning before head coach Kris Czaplinski took a timeout with the Bobcats holding a 12-11 lead. Whatever he said to the Bobcats worked - and then some. To end the match, the Bobcats went on a 13-2 run, dominating Iona and forcing the deciding fifth set with a 25-13 victory in set four. Urycki, Leigh, and Orsi who combined for 12 kills and two blocks in the set.
In the fifth set it looked llike Quinnipiac had momentum despite falling behind early 4-2. After taking the lead 9-6, the Bobcats gave a great effort to close it out but fell short, 15-12 in the set.
The Bobcats will have a busy week ahead of them as they will head south on Wednesday, Sept. 24 to take on the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in Teaneck, New Jersey at 7 p.m. This will be a rematch from earlier in the season when, on Sept. 12, Fairleigh Dickinson defeated the Bobcats 3-2 in the Providence Friar Invitational Tournament. Quinnipiac will hit the road in the Nutmeg State with two games in Connecticut over the weekend. On Saturday, Sept. 27 the Bobcats will have a huge MAAC Conference game at in-state rival Fairfield at 1 p.m. The following day Quinnipiac will head north on I-91 to the state capital to take on the University of Hartford at 1 p.m.
