Hamden, Conn. – Sophomore Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal Friday night as the No. 4/4 Quinnipiac Bobcats knocked off the defending national champion No. 5/5 Clarkson Golden Knights at High Point Solutions Arena.
It was the first trip back to Hamden for the Golden Knights since winning the national championship here in March but the Bobcats picked up the big conference victory in a matchup of two top-five teams. Clarkson snapped its seven game unbeaten streak with the loss to the Bobcats.
It was also just the second home victory in program history against Clarkson with the only other win coming on Nov. 15, 2003. The Bobcats earned their sixth win overall against the Golden Knights.
Quinnipiac extended its winning streak to eight games, breaking the previous record of seven games. The Bobcats also saw their unbeaten streak increase to 11 games with the shut out of the Golden Knights.
Quinnipiac also took over first place in ECAC Hockey as they improve to 10-0-1 (5-0-0 ECAC Hockey) with a conference best 10 points.
Woods' game-winning goal was her fourth goal of the season and first game-winner of the season. Woods has now scored in two consecutive games dating back to the 5-0 win over Union last weekend.
Quinnipiac goaltender Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) kept her perfect record alive as she recorded her seventh shutout of the season. Laden improves to 10-0-0 on the season, the best record in the country. Laden finished with 15 saves in the shutout.
After a scoreless first period, Quinnipiac finally pulled through midway through the second period to score the only goal of the game. Taryn Baumgardt (Innisfail, Alberta) shipped a pass up to the red line where Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) gathered the puck and quickly sent it into the offensive zone. Woods skated in behind the defense to get the puck and then wristed a shot top shelf past Clarkson goaltender Shea Tiley for the only goal of the game.
Tiley finished with 18 saves on 19 shots for Clarkson as the Golden Knights drop to 9-4-1 (4-1-1 ECAC Hockey) on the season.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday afternoon when they welcome the St. Lawrence Saints to High Point Solutions Arena with puck drop scheduled for 3 P.M.
