HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team defeated Northeastern, 3-2, in a non-conference match-up at High Point Solutions Arena in Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats improve to 2-2-1 overall while Northeastern drops to 0-5-0 on the year.
Sophomore Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) led Quinnipiac with a goal and an assist while Travis St. Denis (Trail British Columbia) and Andrew Taverner (Edmonton, Alberta) also scored. In all, eight different Bobcats found their way onto the box score as Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado), Tommy Schutt (Chanhassen, Minnesota), Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota), Justin Agosta (East Meadow, New York) and Alex Barron (Glendora, California) all had assists in the Bobcats' win. Michael Garteig stopped 20 of the Huskies' 21 shots on goal to pick up his second win of the season.
After a scoreless first period, Quinnipiac finally got on the board with just under seven minutes into the second frame with Quinnipiac on the power play. Landon Smith won a battle in the corner to the right of Northeastern goalie Derick Roy and tipped the puck up to Toews at the point. Toews then walked across the blue line before zipping the puck to St. Denis in the opposite face-off circle for the one-timer.
Less than a minute later, it was Toews finding the back of the net to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead. Schutt carried the puck around the back of the Northeastern net and skated up the left wing before feeding Barron. Barron stepped between the face-off circles and back-handed a pass back to Toews for the one-timer to give the Bobcats a two-goal lead.
After Quinnipiac was called for a pair of penalties to put Northeastern on the 5-on-3 power play, Garret Cockerill worked the puck back-and-forth with Kevin Roy before Cockerill wristed a shot from the slot past Quinnipiac's Michael Garteig to trim Quinnipiac's lead by half.
With less than three minutes to play in the period, freshman Taverner gave Quinnipiac a 3-1 lead with his second goal of the year, which also came on the power play.Agosta and Smith passed the puck back and forth between each other as they stood on the blue line in front of the Huskies' bench. Smith then spied Taverner alone on the opposite side of the ice and fired a pass cross-ice to the freshman wing for the one-timer.
With 11 minutes to play, Zach Aston-Reese tied the puck up in the corner to the left of Garteig before Dalen Hedges picked it, spun and threw the puck on goal. Garteig stopped the shot, which came from the goalline, before Roy tipped the puck between Quinnipiac's goalies pads to cut the Bobcats lead to a goal, 3-2.
