Hamilton, New York – The No. 5 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team continued to fill up the score sheet Friday afternoon as the Bobcats opened up ECAC play with a 4-1 victory over the Colgate Raiders at Starr Arena.
Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) led the Bobcats offensively with two goals and an assist while Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) recorded three assists in the conference play opening victory.
Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) and Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) each added their second goals of the season for Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac improves to 6-0-1 (1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) while the Raiders drop to 2-4-0 (0-1-0 ECAC Hockey) after the first conference game of the season.
The third period provided all sorts of excitement as the Bobcats saw themselves up just 2-1 as they approached the two minute mark in the game. Brown scored a huge insurance goal with just 1:41 remaining on the clock to give Quinnipiac a 3-1 lead. Emma Greco (Burlington, Ontario) shipped a pass from the left point to Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) along the left boards, who found Nicole Brown wide open in the slot to one-time a pass past Colgate goaltender Ashlynne Rando.
With under a minute remaining in the third period, Connery netted her second goal of the game and fourth of the season to give Quinnipiac a 4-1 lead and deflate the sails of the Raiders.
Earlier in the third period, Colgate had cut Quinnipiac's lead in half as Megan Sullivan score her fourth power play goal of the season to cut Quinnipiac's lead to 2-1. Shelby Perry passed the puck to Annika Zalewski behind the net in the offensive end. Sitting alone in the slot was Megan Sullivan where Zalewski found Sullivan with a pass and she tapped the puck passed a sprawling Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota).
Quinnipiac dominated Colgate in shots for the game, holding Colgate to single digits, 31-9, as the Raiders didn't record more than four shots in a period.
Connery put the Bobcats up 1-0 in the first period with her first goal of the game 12:07 into the game. On the first power play of the game, Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) skated with the puck from the left point to the center to wrist the puck on net. Cianfarano tried to redirect the shot but was stopped by Rando. The rebound kicked out and Connery collected the puck on the right side of the goal to wrist one high past Rando for her second power play goal of the season.
Roesler doubled Quinnipiac's lead to 2-0 with just 1:24 remaining in the second period with her second goal of the season. Cianfarano won the faceoff in the offensive end back to Connery on the right wing who tapped it to Roesler at the point where she fired a rocket past Rando to light the lamp.
Both teams scored one goal each on the power play, as Sullivan's goal was the first power play goal the Bobcats gave up all season long. Quinnipiac finished the game 1-2 on the power play while Colgate finished 1-4.
Laden continued her impressive play between the pipes as she picked up her sixth win of the season as she allowed just her second goal all year. Laden stopped eight of the nine shots while her counterpart, Rando, recorded 27 saves on the 30 shots she faced.
The Bobcats continue the first weekend of ECAC play when they return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Ithaca, New York to take on the Cornell Big Red at Lynah Rink with puck drop scheduled for 3 P.M.
