Hamden, Connecticut – Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) continued her fast start to her college career as she scored her third game-winning goal to just five games into her collegiate career as the No. 9 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team shut out the Maine Black Bears 2-0 Saturday afternoon.
For Cianfarano, it was also her fifth goal of the season in as many games as she capped off a three goal weekend against the Black Bears.
Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) solidified the victory for Quinnipiac with an empty net, power play goal for her second goal of the season
Both goals were assisted by Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) as she picked up assists number three and four on the season
Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) also continued her impressive performance between the pipes as she picked up her fourth consecutive shutout to begin the season. Although she faced just seven shots on the day, Laden stopped all seven to extend her shutout streak to 239:56.
Laden is also at the top of the Quinnipiac record books after this weekend with her shutout streak as she surpassed her own previous Quinnipiac record of 227:12.
Despite not getting on the scoreboard in the first two periods, the Bobcats still generated a ferocious offensive attack. The Bobcats tallied 28 shots through the first two periods, including 17 in the first period alone.
Shiann Darkangelo tallied the most shots on the day for the offense as she fired nine shots on goal in the victory.
Cianfarano's goal came 5:02 into the third period when Tamberg found her with a pass as she was all alone at the blue line. Cianfarano skated into the offensive zone where she wristed the puck past Maine goaltender Meghann Treacy's blocker side to put the Bobcats on top where they didn't look back.
Things got exciting late in the third period as Maine pulled Treacy with a little under two minutes remaining to give Maine an extra attacker but the opportunity was thwarted by Morgan Sakundiak's hitting from behind penalty. That set up the power play for the Bobcats, where Maine ultimately pulled Treacy again to make it five on five with an empty net. Tamberg stole the puck and found Connery with a pass in the neutral zone before she flung the puck on net from just over the red line to put Quinnipiac up 2-0.
Maine could not break the Quinnipiac defense for a second straight game, as it mustered no more than three shots in any of the three periods and just seven shots on the day.
Saturday marked the third consecutive game which Quinnipiac recorded more than 40 shots, dating back to last Sunday's matchup with the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Treacy finished with 41 saves on the 42 shots she faced in net for the Black Bears after allowing four goals in the previous game to the Bobcats.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team returns to the ice on Friday, Oct. 24 when it travels to Durham, New Hampshire to face the New Hampshire Wildcats at the Whittemore Center Arena with puck drop scheduled for 7 P.M.
