Hamden, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's soccer team (6-4-3) battled to a scoreless tie against Monmouth (6-2-4) on a wet and rainy Saturday afternoon. In a rematch of the 2013 MAAC Championship, both sides were unable to find the back of the net through regulation and two overtime periods. Senior goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) recorded his fifth shutout on the season.
In a very physical match between two defensive-minded squads, chances on the offensive side came more often than expected for the Bobcats. Evidenced by a 14-6 QU advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge on corner kicks, Quinnipiac had several great opportunities. However, two of the region's best goalkeepers shined in this one – Angoitia and Monmouth's Eric Klenofsky – leaving a scoreless deadlock at the end of 110 minutes of action. Monmouth entered the game fourth in the nation with a .410 goals against average. Klenofsky and his back line have allowed just five goals through 11 games and lead the conference with 8 shutouts.
Early in the first half Monmouth had their best chance, but Angoitia made a terrific diving stop on a Dom Sarle strike from the right side. The Brazilian keeper tallied three saves on the day. Ten minutes later, Sophomore James Doig (Liverpool, England) had the first look at a clean shot on goal, but it was saved by Klenofsky and deflected out of bounds.
Late in the second overtime, senior Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) beat his defender up field and crossed the ball two yards in front of the goal, but no Bobcats could get a touch to win the game. Baker led the team with four shots. Raphael Carvalho added three including one that nearly found side netting but was saved by the Hawk keeper.
Neither keeper recorded a save in the overtime periods, as QU outshout Monmouth 3-1.
Both teams remain undefeated in MAAC play as the Bobcats improve to 3-0-2, just one point behind conference leaders Siena and Iona. At 2-0-3, Monmouth gains one point and remains two back of Quinnipiac. The game played out much like the last time these two teams squared off. Last season in the championship game, the Bobcats ousted the Hawks in penalty kicks after going scoreless through double overtime. Monmouth entered the tournament as the number one seed, having tied for first place in the conference regular season standings with Quinnipiac.
With the result, Angoitia recorded his 21st career shutout, moving him just one shy of tying former Bobcat goalkeeper Frederick Hall's all-time mark of 22. Quinnipiac remains unbeaten in their last seven games (5-0-2). They have not suffered a loss since September 17th at Holy Cross. The Bobcats improve to 5-1-1 at the QU Soccer Field in 2014.
Up next, the Bobcats remain at home for a conference game with Manhattan on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 4 PM from the QU Soccer Field.
