The Quinnipiac University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up at the QU Soccer Field in Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats run their unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2) as they go to 6-4-4 overall and 3-0-3 in the MAAC. Manhattan moves to 1-9-2 overall and 0-5-1 in conference play.
The Bobcats unbeaten streak is its longest since the 2009 season when Eric Da Costa's squad opened the season without a loss through its first 10 games, posting a 5-0-5 record. Quinnipiac is now undefeated in its last 12 games against MAAC competition, compiling a 6-0-6 record dating back to last season.
Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) scored the Bobcats only goal of the match on an assist from James Doig (Liverpool, England) less than two minutes into the game. The Bobcats were awarded a corner before Doig fed a perfect ball to the center of the box. Baker emerged from a crowd and headed the ball, popping it over Manhattan goalkeeper Alex Coates McDowall.
Baker now leads the MAAC with six goals against conference opponents to go along with a MAAC-best 13 points. Doig also leads the MAAC with five assists.
With less than 20 minutes to play, Quinnipiac saw a 2-0 lead disappear when John-John Diaz (Miami, Florida) had a Grade-A scoring opportunity that was punched away by Manhattan's McDowall. Diaz handled the ball in the box, split a pair of defenders and launched a laser at McDowall that he was able to turn away.
The Bobcats held off the Jaspers for most of the game, before Manhattan Abraham Bantoah scored with 13 minutes to play. Manhattan was awarded a corner late in the second half and a header by Brandon Alvarado denied by Quinnipiac keeper Borja Angoitia (Bilboa, Spain) before Bantoah slid in behind the defense and banged home the equalizer off the cross bar to put Manhattan on the board.
Neither team could muster a shot in the first overtime period, while Manhattan generated four shots on goal to the Bobcats three in the second overtime period.
Quinnipiac is back in action when it travels to Jersey City, New Jersey on Saturday, Oct. 25 to take on Saint Peter's in a MAAC Conference match-up set for 2 p.m. The Bobcats then return home for their final home game of the regular season against Siena on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m., with Senior Day ceremonies planned for pregame.
