Poughkeepsie, New York – The Quinnipiac men's soccer team won their fifth game in six contests with a 4-2 victory over the Marist Red Foxes. Raphael Carvalho (Danbury Connecticut) led the Bobcats with two goals while Machel Baker (Spanish Town Jamaica) and James Doig (Liverpool, England) added three points apiece. With the result, QU improves to 6-4-2 and 3-0-1 in MAAC play.
Carvalho started the game with a bang, scoring in the second minute for the Bobcats. The senior forward put Quinnipiac on the board early with a breakaway down the right side and a strike to the right corner. Baker was credited with the assist.
Quinnipiac was without senior goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) due to a red card in the last contest against Rider and sophomore Brian Westerman (Rockville Centre, New York) got the call. Westerman made his first career start in goal for the Bobcats. The keeper made his first save in the 14th minute, but was beat three minutes later by Marist senior Dylan Lee. The defender recorded his first goal of the season with a fantastic header of a cross and assist from Steven Arraiano. Westerman could not get a hand on Lee's upper 90 finish.
In the 21st minute, the Bobcats took their second lead of the game. Machel Baker continued his hot streak with his fifth goal in the last four Quinnipiac games, all against conference opponents. With the game tied at one apiece, sophomore James Doig crossed the ball from the left corner, finding Baker for the header into the middle of the net. Against Rider, Baker scored twice with both goals coming off Doig assists. The senior leads the team with 13 points and six goals.
In the 37th minute, Marist tied the game at two off a penalty kick from Erik Dahl. The goal was Dahl's first of the season.
Carvalho scored his second goal of the game and the eventual game winner in the 68th minute. After a cross was deflected in the box, Carvalho knocked in the loose ball for the easy score. Ryan Scheiderman was credited with the assist and his third point on the year.
Seven and a half minutes later, Doig secured the insurance goal for the Bobcats. Set up on a free kick 30 out, Doig placed a perfect ball over the goalkeeper's outstretched hands and into the back of the net. The sophomore has eight points off four assists and two goals this season.
Up next, the Bobcats will come back home to face conference foe Monmouth at the QU Soccer Field. The game will be a rematch of last year's MAAC Championship game, which Quinnipiac won in penalty kicks. Kickoff is set for 3 PM on Saturday, October 18th.
