UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 8 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team recorded its second consecutive 3-0 shutout to start the season, this time defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions Saturday night at Pegula Ice Arena.
The Bobcats used a dominant second period to improve to 2-0-0 (0-0-0 ECAC Hockey) on the season while the Nittany Lions dropped to 1-2-0 (0-0-0 CHA).
Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) and Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) each recorded a goal and an assist while Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) dished out two assists in the victory over the Nittany Lions.
Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) also continued her stellar performance to start the season by recording her second straight shutout and 11th of her career. The Bobcats' netminder saw a little more action against Penn State recording 10 saves in the shutout, just one more than the nine against UConn the week before.
In total the Bobcats recorded 34 shots in the victory compared to just 10 for the Nittany Lions, and held a 26-5 advantage in the final two periods of play.
Quinnipiac and Penn State nearly skated to a scoreless tie in the first period but Lindsey West (Ajax, Ontario) thought otherwise when she gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead with just 39 seconds remaining in the first period when she wristed a shot from the left point past Penn State goaltender Celine Whitlinger off a pass from Cianfarano after a great battle for the puck in the right side corner.
Roesler became the second defensemen of the night to score for the Bobcats on Quinnipiac's first power play goal of the season when she rifled a shot from the left point after a pass from Kosta to give Quinnipiac at 2-0 lead with 9:37 remaining in the second period.
Saturday marked the first time the Bobcats had two defenseman score in a game since Nov. 1, 2013 when Roesler and Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) each scored in a 6-0 win over Colgate.
Just three minutes later the Bobcats made it 3-0 when Cianfarano netted her second career goal in as many games as she crashed the net on Roesler's shot from the right point to tap home the rebound kicked out by Whitlinger.
Late in the second period Laden maintained her shutout with two sprawling saves on a delayed penalty by the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac completely controlled the third period as the defense did not allow a single shot-on-goal to preserve Laden's shutout while the offense kept the puck in the offensive end for much of the period.
Special teams were dominated by the Bobcats as they played extremely well in the game, going 1-4 on the power play recording eight shots compared to Penn State's 0-4 showing with just two shots. The Bobcats remain perfect on the penalty kill to begin the season as they have kill all six penalties between the two games.
It's a quick turnaround for both teams as they return back to Pegula Ice Arena Sunday afternoon with puck drop scheduled for 2 P.M.
