University Park, Pennsylvania – The No. 8 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team remained unbeaten to start the 2014-15 season as the Penn State Nittany Lions came back to force overtime and tie the Bobcats 1-1 Sunday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena.
Quinnipiac continually peppered Penn State goaltender Hannah Ehresmann with shot after shot but the freshman netminder could not be solved. Ehresmann recorded 45 saves on 46 shots in the tie.
The Bobcats lone goal in the game as Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Michigan) scored her first goal of the season with Quinnipiac shorthanded while the Nittany Lions goal was scored by Amy Petersen.
In a game which the offense was plenty, Quinnipiac registered 45 shots on goal in the game but only found the back of the net one time. The Bobcats outshot the Nittany Lions 45-18 for the game.
Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) played well in her first start of the season for the Bobcats stopping 17 of 18 shots to earn the tie.
With the tie, the Bobcats are now 2-0-1 (0-0-0 ECAC Hockey) on the season while the Nittany Lions are 1-2-1 (0-0-0 CHA).
Quinnipiac's offense forced Ehresmann to work in the first period after firing 12 shots on goal compared to just four from the Nittany Lions. The Bobcats nearly converted on a sequence late in the period when the Bobcats sent a flurry of three shots on net in a matter of five seconds but could not find the back of the net.
In the second period the Bobcats turned up the heat on Ehresmann as they kept the puck in the offensive end for much of the period. The Bobcats outshot the Nittany Lions 21-3 in the period but could only find the back of the net once.
Four minutes into the period the Nittany Lions nearly scored the first goal of the game but Rossman nearly did a split in the crease to make the stretching pad save after the deke from Penn State's Hannah Hoenshell as she skated in on net.
After Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) picked up a penalty, the Bobcats went on the penalty kill. Morgan Fritz-Ward (Mason City, Iowa) chased the puck to the back of the net and won the battle for the puck. She brought it out and found Darkangelo in the slot where she one-timed her initial shot which was saved by Ehresmann. The rebound kicked out; however, and Darkangelo poked the puck past Ehresmann for the short-handed goal and her first goal of the season.
Penn State tied the game early in the third period with Petersen's second goal of the season. Laura Bowman's shot sailed wide left of the goal but Petersen collected the rebound and just barely tucked the puck between Rossman and the left post.
The Bobcats had multiple opportunities in the third period to regain the lead as they continued to outshoot the Nittany Lions for the third straight period, but could not figure out Ehresmann between the pipes.
One sequence in the third period came as Ehresmann made two saves diving to the ice but Quinnipiac could not find the back of the net. The play culminated with an Ehresmann make a kick-save on a Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) shot.
Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) made two key blocks in the overtime period to remain tied as the offense had several opportunities but could not convert.
Quinnipiac returns to action Friday afternoon when it hosts the Maine Black Bears at High Point Solutions Arena with puck drop scheduled for 3 P.M.
