
Softball Comes Back To Defeat Buffalo, 7-6, In 11th Inning

Cabrera (Reno, Nev.) scored the game-winning run as the
Quinnipiac University softball team defeated Buffalo, 7-6, in the
bottom of the 11th inning. With the win, the Bobcats
improve to 13-11 and end tournament play in Clearwater, Fla., while
the Bulls fall to 5-19 on the year.
Junior pitcher Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) struck out nine batters and allowed four hits and two runs across nine innings for the Bobcats, while Mina Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.) pitched two innings for Quinnipiac.
Cabrera led the Bobcats as she went 2-5 with two runs scored and an additional two RBI. Second baseman Jacqueline Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) went 3-5 with a run scored, while Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) contributed two hits, scored one run and picked up a RBI.
Buffalo took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Alexandra Bejarano and Alyssa Ward each scored a run for the Bulls. In the bottom of the second, Quinnipiac's Kim Brzezinski (Tinley Park, Ill.) led off with a double to left field. Julia Sini (Elgin, Texas) came in to pinch run for Brzezinski and advanced to third on a Jessica Amenda (Milford, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. Joelle Jacobsen (Flemington, N.J.) reached first on a Holly Johnson error, driving in Sini for the Bobcats' first run of the game.
Buffalo added two runs in the top of the third to increase its lead by three runs, 4-1. Quinnipiac responded with a run in the bottom of the third on an Alba single to right field, driving in Cabrera who reached base on a walk.
The Bobcats entered the bottom of the seventh down by two runs, 4-2. Quinnipiac's Ristow reached first on a Bulls error and advanced to third on an Alba double to right field. Duffy hit a double up the middle, driving in Alba and Ristow to tie the game at four runs apiece.
The score remained tied at 4-4 until the 10th inning when the Bulls' Bejarano drove in Kristin Waldron with a single down the left-field line, placing Buffalo ahead by one run, 5-4. Quinnipiac matched the Bulls' run when Alex Murray (Milford, Mass.) doubled up the middle to drive in Kortney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) in the bottom of the 10th, to keep the Bobcats alive.
After Buffalo added another run in the top of the 11th, Quinnipiac came back yet again, this time scoring two runs to take the win in the bottom of the 11th. After Jacobsen advanced to third on a Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) sac bunt, Cabrera tripled to right field, driving in Jacobsen and herself for the game-winning run.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it hosts Connecticut in its first home game of the 2011 season on Thursday, March 24 at 3:30 p.m. The game will be played at the Quinnipiac Softball Field in Hamden, Conn.
