HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were held off the scoreboard through the first three innings of play as Cole Constable had the game's only hit at the time.
After Fairfield shut down the Bobcats in the top of the fourth inning, the Stags struck for three runs on a three-run home run to right center field to take the lead.
Fairfield's lead doubled in the fifth inning as they hit their second three-run home run in as many innings, giving them a 6-0 lead.
Quinnipiac responded in the top half of the sixth inning with three runs to cut their deficit in half. Alex Irizarry got the scoring started in the inning as he laced a double down the right field line to score CJ Willis. Christian Smith brought in Quinnipiac's second run of the inning on an RBI groundout as Sebastian Mueller crossed home. With one out in the inning, Johnny Knox doubled to left field to bring home Alex Irizarry to make it a three-run game.
The Stags scored a run in their half of the sixth inning to push their lead back to four. Fairfield would score eight runs the next inning to blow the game open, taking a 15-3 lead with the Bobcats down to their final six outs.
In the eighth inning, Johnny Knox hit his sixth home run of the season with his two-run home run. The Stags shut the Bobcats down from that point as they finished off the win in the series opener.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Six Bobcats recorded at least one hit in the first game of the series and three of the six recorded two hits.
- Johnny Knox had a nice day at the plate, going 2-for-4 at the dish, driving in three RBIs to push his season total to 26.
- Knox hit his sixth home run of the season with his two-run blast in the eighth inning.
- Christian Smith had another two-hit game as his batting average rose to .356, which leads the team.
- Cole Constable has picked up multiple hits in back-to-back games since returning to the lineup.
- Sebastian Mueller picked up a hit to extend his hit streak to eight.
- Alex Irizarry hit his team-leading 15th double of the season.
