WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Quinnipiac baseball team begins its 2025 season in Wilmington, North Carolina, where it will face the #8 Georgia Bulldogs and the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in two games each. The contests against UNC Wilmington will be streamed on FloSports.
HISTORY VS. GEORGIA
- Friday's matchup will be the fourth meeting between the two teams in their program history.
- Georgia leads the all-time series, 3-0, with a sweep of the three-game set from Mar 6-8, 2009.
- The Bobcats are being outscored 33-8 in their meetings against the Bulldogs.
- Georgia finished the 2024 season with a 43-17 overall record and 17-13 in the SEC.
- The Bulldogs lost their lone game in the SEC Tournament to the LSU Tigers, 9-1.
- Georgia made it to the NCAA Regionals, winning three straight to advance to the Super Regionals.
- The Bulldogs fell in three games to the #10 NC State Wolfpack as their season ended.
- Slate Alford is a key returner for the Bulldogs as he hit .300 in 60 games played last season. Alford hit 17 home runs and drove in 69 RBIs in his junior season.
- Leighton Finley will be a key pitcher in the Bulldogs staff. Finley made 17 appearances with 16 starts and had an ERA of 4.14. Finley struck out 76 batters in 76.0 innings pitched en route to a 6-1 record.
- Friday's matchup will be the fourth meeting between the two teams in their program history.
- UNC Wilmington leads the all-time series 3-0, having swept the three-game set from March 16-18, 2018.
- The Bobcats are being outscored 37-6 in their meetings against the Seahawks.
- UNC Wilmington finished the 2024 season with a 40-21 overall record and 20-7 in the CAA.
- The Seahawks won the CAA Championship as they defeated the College of Charleston 6-4.
- UNC Wilmington's season came to a close in the NCAA Regional as they fell to Georgia Tech 3-1 to end their season.
- Tanner Thach will be a key return piece for the Seahawks as he returns for his junior season. Thach was second on the team with a .324 average in 61 starts last season. Thach led the team with 27 home runs and 75 RBIs.
- Zane Taylor made 14 starts for the Seahawks last season and had a record of 5-1 with an ERA of 3.99. Taylor struck out 56 batters over 58.2 innings pitched.
- The Quinnipiac Baseball team was picked to finish 4th in the MAAC Preseason Poll.
- Outfielder CJ Willis was the lone Bobcat representative on the Preseason All-MAAC team.
- The senior started 49 games last season and had a batting average of .284.
- Willis hit eight home runs, eleven doubles, and three triples, while driving in 42 RBIs.
- Willis Drove in a season-high four RBIs in the win against UMass (5/1).
- The Bobcats return 15 players from last year's team, with 12 of those players seeing game action.
- Gabe Wright, Christian Smith, Kyle Garbowski, CJ Willis, Sebastian Mueller, and James Marino will be key returners on the offensive side of the plate.
- Jack Kabel, Ryan Hutchinson, Mike Poncini, Jack Gannon, Matt Alduino, and Andrew Rubayo will look to make an impact when they toe the rubber.
- Matt Alduino and Andrew Rubayo were named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watchlist.
LOTS OF NEW FACES
- Quinnipiac welcomes 16 new faces to their campus this season.
- The Bobcats used the transfer portal to fill the holes in their lineup, grabbing Sean McCulloch (Susquehanna), Johnny Knox (Nichols College), Alex Irizarry (Maryland), Josh Lajoie (Lipscomb), Ryan O'Connell (St. Bonaventure), Griffin Seibel (Xavier), Cole Constable (Maryland), Luke Zeisloft (Maryland), Jack Bryan (Trevecca Nazarene), and Nick Balcom (Finger Lakes Community College).
- Quinnipiac also brought in six first years, J.C. Franconere from Sparta, New Jersey, Samuel Wright from Ardmore, Pennsylvania, Austin Ludwig from Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, Ian Nilsen from Easton, Connecticut, Christian Nilsen from Easton, Connecticut, and Matt Park from Bridgewater, New Jersey.
- The Bobcats will open up MAAC play on March 7th as they start a three-game home series against the Iona Gaels.
- Quinnipiac will battle in-state rival Yale on March 19th at Yale (3 PM) and at home against Yale on April 15th (3 PM).
- On April 1st, the Bobcats will travel to Storrs to take on the UConn Huskies in a midweek non-conference matchup.
- Quinnipiac will play their final home series of the season from May 8-12 as the Siena Saints come to Hamden.
- QU will wrap up the regular season at Sacred Heart for a three-game set from May 15-17.
NEXT TIME OUT
- The Bobcats are back on the road next weekend (Feb. 21-23) as they travel to Radford, Virginia for a three-game series.
