Bobcats Sweeps Doubleheader Against Hornets, Posts Two Shutouts

DOVER, D.E.-- The Quinnipiac softball team won the first matchup in a doubleheader against Delaware State in extra innings as the two went through seven straight without a single run. Sophomore Sydney Horan pitched nine strikeouts in the contest to keep the Hornets at bay until first year Natalia Apatiga came in the eighth.
GAME ONE RECAP
Eighth inning- First year Apatiga was able to break the scoreless streak when she doubled to center with Brooke Hilliard on second who was able to cross home plate and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Gianna Palmisano was put in a pinch runner for Apatiga on second. Amanda Engel's at bat was a fly out to right field but gave Palmisano enough time and space to score and extend QU's lead to two.
Delaware State was unable to battle back in the bottom of the eighth as Apatiga struck out two Hornets swinging and one Hornet was caught stealing at third.
NOTABLES
First Inning - Mary Fogg got things started with a leadoff single up the middle. Fogg made her way to third after a fielder's choice and a wild pitch. Natalia Apatiga drew a walk and a wild pitch brought home Fogg for the Bobcats' first run of the game. Amanda Engel singled up the middle to put runners on first and second for Lala Pascual. Pascual would send the ball into right field and find her way to third for a triple while driving in two runs to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Pascual would eventually score on a wild pitch to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead after the top half of the first.
Second Inning – Apatiga walked and was drove home on a Pascual single to extend the lead to five.
Fourth Inning – Pascual singled with two outs to bring up Serena Fogg. Fogg doubled to right field to drive in Pascual to extend the lead to six. Mac Davis would drive in Fogg on a single before being thrown out at second to end the inning.
Fifth Inning - Brooke Hilliard came up with the bases loaded and nobody out. Hilliard would send the ball back up the middle for a single to score two runs and extend the lead to 9-0 for the Bobcats.
Jaclyn Gonzalez went the distance striking out five batters and not allowing a run on five hits.

The Bobcats return to the field on Saturday, March 4 as they are set to participate in the Red Storm Classic in Queens, N.Y. They will face Drexel at 9:30 a.m. and St. John's at noon.
