Bobcats Split Opening Day of Hampton/Norfolk State Tournament

HAMPTON, V.A. – The Quinnipiac softball team opened up their 2023 campaign at the Hampton/Norfolk State Tournament in Virginia. The Bobcats opened up the season with a win against Lehigh, 1-0.
After a quick turnaround, the Bobcats wrapped up their doubleheader against Hampton, where they lost to the Pirates in eight innings by a score of 5-4.
Game One Recap:
First Inning – The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Brooke Hilliard drew a walk to get the inning started. With two outs, Natalia Apatiga reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Amanda Engel took full advantage of the Lehigh error as she doubled to right field to score Hilliard from second.
Sydney Horan went the distance allowing just two hits and one walk in seven innings pitched.
Notable Stats:
Third Inning—Hampton went up 4-0 in the third inning, thanks to a walk, and three unearned runs.
Fourth Inning—The Bobcats cut into Hampton's lead when Natalia Apatiga scored on a single from Amanda Engel.
Seventh Inning—Kennedy Demott's single brought Sofia Vega home and the score, 4-2 in Hampton's favor. However, the Bobcats weren't done fighting and added two more to the board as Bridget Nasir's groundout to shortstop brought Brooke Hilliard across home plate. Demott, who was on third after Nasir's at bat, was able to score on Apatiga's single line drive up the middle.
The Bobcats forced extra innings as the two teams were tied up at 4 after seven.
Eight Inning—Hampton brought the victory home as Taylor Ivery singled and gave Emily Kepple enough time to cross home plate and bring the score to 5-4 Pirates.
