Svecula Named Conference Offensive POTW, Mazzola Tabbed Defensive POTW
EDISON, N.J. – Following a season-opening win against ACC foe Boston College, Quinnipiac men's soccer has earned two MAAC weekly awards – as announced by the league office on Monday, August 30, 2021.
Junior Tomas Svecula has been named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, and graduate student Jared Mazzola was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week.
Tomas Svecula netted the game-winner in the 66th minute of action against BC, breaking the 1-1 tie. Svecula was fouled inside the box, then sent the penalty kick into the lower-right corner of the net to give Quinnipiac the lead. The goal is Svecula's 10th career score. He scored six times in 2019 as a first-year student, netted three goals during the spring 2021 campaign, then netted the game-winner for QU on Thursday vs. Boston College.
Jared Mazzola made seven saves for the Bobcats, including multiple timely stops in the second half to keep Quinnipiac ahead. The reigning MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year now has 17 career wins at QU, and 167 total saves.
