Bobcats' Rising Senior Named 48th Captain in Program History
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey head coach Rand Pecknold has announced that Wyatt Bongiovanni (Birmingham, Michigan) has been named the team's captain for the 2021-22 season.
"Wyatt has been a great leader and representative for our program since he arrived at Quinnipiac," Pecknold said. "I have always been impressed by Wyatt's work ethic and attention to detail. He is our culture and was a unanimous selection by his teammates and coaches."
Bongiovanni is the 48th captain in program history, succeeding Odeen Tufto '21 who served as the team captain for the Bobcats in 2020-21. Bongiovanni previously served as an assistant captain for the Bobcats as a junior during Tufto's captaincy.
Throughout his first three seasons, Bongiovanni has been among Quinnipiac's top offensive weapons as he has totaled 34 goals and 22 assists for 56 points in 81 career games. He has been a key part of the Bobcats' power play, scoring 12 goals on the man advantage.
Despite missing significant time with an injury last season, Bongiovanni still managed five goals and three assists for eight points in nine games. He scored a goal in his first game back in the ECAC Hockey Championship game on March 20.
Bongiovanni led Quinnipiac in goals and was second on the team in points as a sophomore in 2019-20, as he finished with 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points. He scored five goals on the power-play and led Quinnipiac with 109 shots on goal.
As a first year, Bongiovanni was third on the team with 14 goals, and also ranked third with six power-play goals.
He was named to the 2018-19 ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team and was also named an AHCA All-American Scholar.
Bongiovanni has been a finalists for the ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year Award for two straight seasons as he has excelled in the classroom in his studies towards a BS in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management. He is also a two-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team selection.
