ECAC Hockey Release
ALBANY, N.Y. - ECAC Hockey has announced the top three finalists for the Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year award, and women's ice hockey senior Grace Markey has been recognized as a top three finalist. ECAC Hockey announced the list of finalists from each member institution last week, and has narrowed down the top three. The winner of the 2021 Mandi Schwartz award will be presented on Tuesday, March 2.
The Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to an ECAC Hockey female player in honor of Mandi Schwartz, who played ice hockey at Yale and passed away in April 2011 after a long battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Markey is among a handful of talented leaders across the ECAC who have been selected as finalists for the prestigious award. To be selected, a student-athlete must be a leader within their team, the classroom and the community.
Markey is an extraordinary leader on and off the ice for the Bobcats. She is serving as an assistant captain this season and is the team's community service leader. She is also the Q-Coor campus leader for on-campus community service efforts. This season, she helped organize and fundraise over $2,000 for the team's annual "Do It For Daron" game. In addition, Markey created a program for Quinnipiac professors to have their children do workouts on zooms with student-athletes.
She is a three-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic selection, three-time AHCA Academic All-American, and member of the Biological Honor society.
Top Three Finalists
Grace Markey, Quinnipiac
Darby Melia, Brown
Devon Facchinato, Cornell
